TOPIC: ARGUMENT162 - A recent study shows that people living on the continent of North America suffer 9 times more chronic fatigue and 31 times more chronic depression than do people living on the continent of Asia. Interestingly, Asians, on average, eat 20 grams of soy per day, whereas North Americans eat virtually none. It turns out that soy contains phytochemicals called isoflavones, which have been found to possess disease-preventing properties. Thus, North Americans should consider eating soy on a regular basis as a way of preventing fatigue and depression.

By providing with us that the Asians eat approximately 20 grams of soy every day while the Americans do not, whereas the possibility of Americans suffering the chronic fatigue and chronic depression is much higher compared with Asians, the author of this argument tried to persuade us that Americans should eat soy regularly as Asians do, and this eating habit will prevent Americans from fatigue and depression. I heavily agree with the idea of eating healthier. However, I can hardly see any logic in the way the speaker announced, in other words, it is suffered in several logic flaws in the argument, and I'll list below.
To begin with, one can hardly know the reason of certain disease or mental disorder by merely examine the way of eating a person leads, wheather one is having soy as his or her meal has nothing to do with the fatigue and depression. In order to obtain the answer of such problem, many aspects should be concerned: living conditions, schedule of a person's life, pressure in the working and so on. Even if the style of eating is important, it it wiser to conclude one's idea by study a broader range of the menu in his or her daily lifes.
Moreover, even the soy has a function of making people healthier, there is no evidence to support the idea that it is the isoflavones contribute to the result, some other elements in soy may also play an significant role as a safe guard of our body. Besides, it is entirely possible that isoflavones can be functional only accompanied with those unknown elements in soy. On the other hand, being useful in preventing disease, isoflavones may not be an active factor in dealing with fatigue and depression, there is not any further evidence in the argument to show its effectiveness.
Finally, to address the situation of high possibility in suffering fatigue and depression, people can search for substitudes of soy, since not all the people in North America like soy. Some other food may also contained such illness-preventing elements and are welcomed by average people in North America. Nutrition pills, as many Americans take everyday, may operated like the magic "soy" and thus serves as another solution.
In sum, the argument is ill-conceived in persuading people to eat more soy for the purpose of preventing fatigue and depression. It will be more persuassive when provide with us more convincing evidence and data such as the relationship between isoflavones and fatigue as well as depression, clearly presented data and the like. Only in this way can it be a better suggestion.
