TOPIC: ARGUMENT194 - A recent study suggests that people who are left-handed are more likely
to succeed in business than are right-handed people. Researchers studied photographs of 1,000
prominent business executives and found that 21 percent of these executives wrote with their
left hand. So the percentage of prominent business executives who are left-handed (21
percent) is almost twice the percentage of people in the general population who are left-
handed (11 percent). Thus, people who are left-handed would be well advised to pursue a
career in business, whereas people who are right-handed would be well advised to imitate the
business practices exhibited by left-handers.

The author of this argument has drawn a conclusion that left-handed people would be well
advised to persue a career in business while right-handed people would better to imitate such
career led by left-handed people. To convince us with the view, the arguer offered several
evidence, such as a recent study about the ratio of these two groups of people. However,
these evidence are indefensible in terms of supporting the conclusion.

To begin with, the very issue discussed is that which group is more suitable for business
career, the right-handed or the left handed? However, when examining the data provided in the
passage, we can find that such comparison is made between the elite of business people and
those average people, how can we know whether left-handed people would be more successful in
business field? To make a right comparison, the arguer should provide the ratio of left-
handed people in business rather that the whole population. Simply put, it is the false
analogy mislead us, and even weaken the conclusion stated above.

Besides, even such comparison somehow matches the right one, the study, however, may
statistically invalid according to the detail offered by the author. Firstly, the population
of people studied is too small, when considered the total number of nation, at least the
number of people who do business, such 1,000 can not prove anything. Secondly, photos can
only show a static image of some one, thus, such so called "left-handed" may not be true
left-handed people, it is entierly possible that they can write with both hands, however, can
do nothing without their right hand when expose to other affeirs. No further evidence to
demonstrate the authenticity of such problem.

Finally, even disregard the authenticity of the people's status in the picture, the suggestion given by the author is rather arbitrary, since the job one is looking for should consider whether he/she likes it. On the other hand, there is no evidence to show that the right-handed people is less successful to those left-handed people and thus should imitate the latter ones. From another point, one can not be successful by merely imitating others, it is the creativity serves as an important part in one's way to the final goal.

In sum, all these semmingly solid evindence are lacking of proof and thus the conclusion is
too hasty to be made by the arguer. To make it more convincing, it shoul provide better
oganized logic statement as well as the statistical data such as the number of left-handed
people in business field and further information of those prominent executives. All These factors are
vital in making the argument more persuasive.
