Do you agree or disagree with the following statement? In university, students
should take the history courses no matter what field they study in. Use specific
reasons and examples to support your answer.(07/28/07)
As far as I am concerned, history is a part of everyone and there is no doubt that students should take the history courses no matter what field they study in. My argument goes as follows.

Firstly, only when we learn history can we get a better understanding of our nation, our people and ultimately a better understanding of ourselves. Looking at the breathtaking ancient buildings, we are astonished by our ancestors' skills. Touching the bricks in the Great Wall, we are moved by the perseverance of the builders. From studying the debris and objects left by the ancient residents, we can imagine the picture of how they lived. Also we can understand their wisdom. A knowledge in history can make us proud of our ancestors and build up the sense of national pride. However, knowing all the struggles and adversities our nation has gone through, we will cherish what we have now and understand our responsibility. In a word, history tell us where we from and where to go, which is part of our life. We just can not stay away from history.

Secondly, we can learn a lot from history. The successes in history give us examples to follow, while the failures provide lessons to learn. Take myself as an example, I always take Marie Curie as my idol and her story really inspires me to pursue a career in the scientific world. Without the knowledge in history, how can I know Curie? Maybe I would not go this far in the study without the inspiration I get from her life. Likewise, it is the two world wars that make people today know the cruelty of wars and will do anything they can to prevent them. No one can deny the fact that the experience gains from history greatly helps us solve the current problems.

From what has been discussed above, I believe it is clear that students should take history courses regardless of what field they study in.
