131"The arts (painting, music, literature, etc.) reveal the otherwise hidden ideas and impulses of a society."
The assertion passes on a message that the hidden ideas and impulses of a society can be revealed through the arts, including painting, music, literature etc. Admittedly, the creativity and inspiration of the artists are extracted from the ordinary life. Though, in my opinion, the assertion is valid only under a certain social context.
(没看出上面两句为什么用though连,有转折关系么?the creativity and inspiration of the artists are extracted from the ordinary life是转诉作者的观点所以后接though?
As the lake poet William Wordsworth says, all good poetry is the spontaneous overflow of powerful feelings. I totally stand by him. The real valuable works comes out from the life the artists are experiencing. A lot of example can be enumerated. David Copperfield by Charles Dickens is regarded as his veiled autobiography, and all of Mark Twain’s later works somewhat related with his miserable personal life, in which all of his family members died one after another. These examples tell us that the creation of artist comes out from his life, which is inevitably concerned with the whole social condition.
As far as I am concerned, from a historical perspective, the arts conducted by artists cannot always express their true emotions freely, especially during the period in which sensitive social factors, say religious, governmental, constrain and suppress the creation by artists. In this sense, the hidden ideas and impulses cannot reveal(被动?) through arts. As time passing by, there comes the personality liberation, during which people can express themselves without worrying about those social conventions. Therefore, the arts in such historical context can somewhat uncover the veil of society and demonstrate the real social condition and impulses.
A famous Chinese writer called Lao She, who is a productive one, contributes a large number of pieces of works which concentrate on the local lives and attack on the odious social atmosphere. However, during the Culture Revolution, he cannot stand the cruel torture, physical and mental, so that he chose to drown himself in the Wei Ming Lake. It’s a painful result to be accepted by Chinese people and a great loss of the intellectual treasure. So we can see that, not in every historical context do the artists can express themselves freely. 。。express themselves freely)
Another convincing case is the ever existed hired scribbler by the sovereign in ancient Chinese history. By saying hired scribbler, I mean the people who speak for the government by writing pieces of work which directly lead to the obscurity of the public seeing and hearing. What’s more important is that the arts produced by this peculiar group of people concealed the authentic social appearance and hid the existed social problems. This series of arts in the autocratic period cannot totally reveal the impulses of the society.
As the development of society is carried out, democracy and the liberty of personality assure the freedom of speech and the overflow of feelings. Judging from the current arts, be ironic or eclectic, we can safely reach a reference that arts can reveal the hidden ideas and impulses of society under the circumstance that the freedom of personality is assured.
In sum, I partially agree with the assertion. And to my point of view, arts produced under the suppression from government, religion and etc. can not reveal the impulses of the society. The contention is well grounded only based on a hypothesis that the society can tolerate the liberty of personality.
