With respect to who gives society something of lasting value, it is not a good to separate the role of artist and critic. Actually because of the collaboration of them, we can know the value of arts impressively. Now, I will illustrate the cooperation of them from some aspects.

There is no denying that the artists provide the society values which will sustain with time passing. They give moral encouragements and the sense of beauty such like the Statue of Liberty and many wonderfully paintings. But does the thing most people don’t think it is valuable has no merit? Fortunately, it is the critic who has extensive knowledge and experiences of aesthetics and a taste in art that reinforces a layman's appreciation and understanding of arts. With the help of the critic, we can have an insight into the artist's work to understand his passion and spirit.

As we known, there are manifold artists in this planet and they bring innumerable arts to the world everyday. But the common people cannot found the value from these arts because they don't have enough time or they don't have profound knowledge. It’s just a perfect diamond cannot glow if there is nobody pick it out from minerals and burnish it. Fortunately, there are critics in the world. With the help of the critic, we find many priceless arts from some nameless artists. Here is an example which is known to all of us but I must take it at this place, the critics found the value of Sunflower which was ignored almost for half a century, without the critics, maybe we don’t know the value of Van Gogh nowadays!

Furthermore, I think comment is the re-creation of art. Because the critics and artists observer the world from different perspectives, the critics can help the artists to knows the deficiency or flaws of their works, some constructive criticism can help artists to think their works in a more spacious way so they can improve their works and make better works in the future. For example, the extensive and impressive comments of films can help the directors and actors to find their deficiency so they can create better works next time. So most of the artists cannot make such great achievements lack of essential criticism made by the critics. But, to some extend, sometimes the critics are limited by the narrow confines of old and established parameters, they misunderstand even cannot accept some creativity arts which they think the works might violate the value of some traditions, and excessive criticism will constrain the artist’s creativity, spoil his or her creative impulse. So, everything have two aspects. The critics could not decide which works would stand the test of time, only time can.

In sum, both the artists and the critics give society long valuable things. They observe the world in different perspectives so common people can fully understand things and find the essence of arts which will be valuable forever. So the cooperation of artist and critics play an important part in the currency of valuable works.
