It is the artist, not the critic, who gives society something of lasting value.

Artist, in mordern people's eyes, are those who creat differents kinds of arts, ranging from literature(novels,poetry,proses,etc.),paintings,music, to photography and architecture.They are specially differentiated from craftsman, whose success depends on their skill,not their creativity. Modern critics include professionals and amatuers, and some great minds in the process of art history and artists and critics rolled into one. Familiar with their jobs and goals, what is the lasting value of arts and critiques? Why shall we read literature, go to gallaries for viewing the paintings? And Why are we pushed to read critiques of others or issue our own ones? When an object evokes one's mind just like electric shock and has an effect lasts in one's spiritual life, undoutedly it has well deserved lasting value. Observing the art history and contemplating the phenomena in it, artist,by creating intial work for appreciation and evaluation, contributes more to the lasting value in society than critic does.

Art work or the appreciation of it bring modern people an unique experience of transcending the material world to a spiritually free realm. Standing in front of a painting, or reading alound a poem, humans lose themselves in the beauty and find their beliefs there. The difference between the appreciation of art and the recreatinoal entertainment, although they both take human to a world free from materillism, lies in the result after they come back to the reality. Art admirers bring the beliefs they found back into their lives and make lives more beautiful and meaningful, while fun enthusiasts will find real life more disappointing because the virtual indulgement gives them no more than a vent for complaints. Artists express creative impulse in their works which we may never touched or noticed before, however, by admiring those masterpieces we gain a resonance of rapture and sorrow which are hidden in our heart or a resolution to the confusion which may happen in the future.

Admittedly, critics play an important role in promoting the debate on an art and even push new art movements. Art critics are expected to have a good knowledge of the art history and the certain art they comment on. By publishing their criticism on journals or books, they stir a debate in society on this topic, lead to various understanding of the topic, and intrigue common people to appreciate the art. Further more, in the process of art history, it is art critics that define an art style and promote a new art movement. Roger Fry is a case in point. As an English art critic, he advocated recent developments in French painting, to which he gave the name post-impression. His study make it clear where the artists stand in relation to the general historic art process.

However, as to the lasting value of society, artists' activity is the most essential part. A good art is one that deserves to be highly rated through all ages. A piece of art work involves so many elements that it deserves critique from different aspects. Once it is created, its value will not fade but only be refreshed by audience from different ages and regions. Nevertheless, critiques come and go, with only a minority leaving their marks in the history like Roger. Critics' work is less risky than artists', and also less outstanding in the aspect of contributing to the social lasting value.

The lasting value of an object depends on the effect of uplifting one's spirit, there is no easy way to get there. Whether artists or critics, only by creativity and innovation, they can hand on their feelings to others in contemporary society and posterity. Until now, I think artists have done a better job than critics generally, they create the initial resource and run most risks to reach this goal.
