娃哈哈 终于写到老娘顺手的题目了

7"The video camera provides such an accurate and convincing record of contemporary life that it has become a more important form of documentation than written records."

The speaker assets that video cameras, compared with written records, has played a more and more important role in documentation. While I concede that, the breakthrough invention of video cameras do bring convenience for people to record real life, in some situations the accuracy and the reliability of the video record are doubtable, which severely weaken its value as a form of documentation.

Admittedly, a video camera, as a convenient and brilliant tool, fulfills people’s request for motion pictures and a flashback of past. Since the day it was invented, the video camera has been widely used in various social fields. It realizes the possibility of live broadcasting, especially when something emergent happens, like wars or accidents, by which people can easily receive the fastest information several miles away. It also helps the film making which provides more people the joy of watching vivid stories. And the video tapes have become another import means by which people storage and archive pictures for further processing or analysis. Recent years, video camera has even become a domestic device. In developed countries like Japan, every household has a set of video camera for recording daily trivial and memorial moments.

However, whether or not, the video camera can provides accurate and convincing record is questionable, sometimes it even cause social problems. First of all, the highly developed technology makes it possible to re-edit the pictures taken by video camera. And this simplifies the way to make the motion pictures to whatever we want. In other words, the videos no longer tell the reality but were shaped intentionally. Secondly, according to the theory of Gatekeeping instituted by social psychologist Kurt Lewin, the videos are taken under the bias of the cameramen, whether they realize it or not. The famous documentaries <China> shot by Italian director Michelangelo Antonioni has triggered big dispute. This documentary was denounced as “anti-Chinese” and “anti-communist” by the Chinese government.

Apart from the doubtable natures mentioned above, the special function of video camera for surreptitious or remote viewing sometimes may violate social the right of privacy or even ethical standards. Such as the famous scandal of Paris Hilton, the sex video named 1 Night in Paris, which severely damaged the girl’s reputation, was filmed by a tripod-mounted camera and quickly spread over the world.

Finally, a video record is pale, comparing with written work, when considered as a form of documentation not only because it is difficult to judge its accuracy and reliability but also because of the volume of valuable information it can provide. It is well-known that the preserved written work is always the highly concentrated essence of the life, and it is always abstract, concise and well-concluded. It provides more space for readers to imagine and meditate while video record provides more vivid supplement and help people to understand. Thus, video camera can hardly replace the written work as the role of documentation.

In sum, the speaker’s assertion overstates the advantages of video cameras and, at the same time, overlooks some of the disadvantages like bias, inaccuracy and hidden immorality. We should valuate the video camera in a wise and objective way: video camera benefits the society, but it should be carefully utilized; video tapes provide new ways of documentation, but it cannot be more important than written work.

Such as the famous scandal of Paris Hilton, the sex video named 1 Night in Paris, which severely damaged the girl’s reputation, was filmed by a tripod-mounted camera and quickly spread over the world.(这段的质疑感觉和题目关系不是很大,题目的核心其实是讨论讲摄像记录是否比文字记录重要或者优越。
