The speaker asserts that scientific research always merits investment no matter how controversial its results may turn out to be. In general, I agree with the statement, on the condition that money should be evenhandedly spent on addressing pressing social problems in the meantime.

First, the nature of research is meant to explore the unveiled and uncharted frontiers, which directly leads to the uncertainty of its results. Scientific research is often initiated due to pure curiosity, and thus it is hard to expect its results, let alone its impacts on society. Maxwell felt astonished to find the uniformity between electricity and magnetism. And he could not possibly foresee how this theory has changed the appearance of the world afterwards. On the contrary, if we boggle at unpredictable research whose results may be controversial, we humans will definitely miss a lot of miraculous discoveries.

Second, in my opinion, every form of research is beneficial in essence, whose ultimate effects are largely reliant on how people make use of them. The last century witnesses a myriad of impressive inventions and initiative theories, which have made both positive and negative effects on society and human beings. The advent of computer and Internet is obvious a memorable invention, bringing about unprecedented convenience and productivity for us. However, they also allow hackers to commit crimes in the virtual world, throwing a threat to the stability of our society. The research on cloning is aimed at cultivate better produces and prolong people's longevity in the first place. Nevertheless, its abuses, especially on human beings, will definitely create problems in ethics and morality. Therefore, the results of research are controversial only because the people utilize them in differing ways.

For that matter, governments should play important roles on supervising and requiring people to harness the scientific research by a proper means. Many countries have prohibited the application of cloning technology to human beings, which to a certain extent alleviate the stressful dispute on this issue. Under power of governments, we have reasons to expect people to make use of the research for the good of mankind more efficiently and effectively.

Moreover, we should also consider the urgency of solving existing and pressing problems. When putting money aside for scientific research, governments inevitably have to cut down the finances on solving immediate social problems. The government of Soviet Union committed series of fallacies on this issue. To compete with the US, Russia spared no pains to develop industry and military manufactory, at the expense of depression in economics. Notwithstanding the great progress made in science research, such as space navigation projects, the national economy was stagnant and close to breakdown, raising serious social problems. Therefore, it is advisable for governments to concern with the importance of research as long as to devote sufficient money to addressing social problems, in order to guarantee the harmony of society.

To sum up, research should be invested for the sake of long-term interests of human beings. Meanwhile we are forced to strike a balance in allocating resources between scientific research and practical solutions to mitigate pressing social problems. Only through this can we ensure our current society to remain prosperous and promise a brighter future.
