TOPIC: ARGUMENT37 - Woven baskets characterized by a particular distinctive pattern have previously been found only in the immediate vicinity of the prehistoric village of Palea and therefore were believed to have been unique to the Palean people. Recently, however, archaeologists discovered such a "Palean" basket in Lithos, an ancient village across the Brim River from Palea. The Brim River is very deep and broad, and so the ancient Paleans could only have crossed it by boat, but there is no evidence that the Paleans had boats. And boats capable of carrying groups of people and cargo were not developed until thousands of years after the Palean people disappeared. Moreover, Paleans would have had no need to cross the river-the woods around Palea are full of nuts, berries, and small game. It follows that the so-called Palean baskets were not unique to Palea.

As a basket with the particular distinctive pattern have been found in Lithos, whether the so-called Palean baskets is unique to Palea turns to be doubtful. Before we deny the unique of the Palean baskets, the possibility that the basket found in Lithos was delivered from Palea should be ruled out. The writer evidently realized the possibility mentioned, however, he narrowly focuses on the existence of boats and sloppily concludes that Paleans did not need to cross the river.

Except the boats there are still quantities of ways that the Palean baskets could cross the river and appear in Lithos. Firstly,  the existence of a skilled swimmer is possible, he may swam across the river with a Palean basket. Secondly, since most of the baskets are able to float on the river, the Palean baskets may also be capable to float. Then if a person dropped a Palean basket in the river carelessly, which often happened, the basket itself could float across the river.Thirld, as the passage mentioned, there are majority of small game. They may bring the basket in the river for fun. What's more, a strong enough bird or something actually could carry a basket across the river.

Until now, all the attention is about Galea. What about the Lithos which is on the other side of the river. People in Lithos may be capable to manufacture boats. As known, the woods

around Galea are full of nuts, berries. The motion to cross the river for food made sense.

What's more, the villages here we talk about are prehistoric. As to the Brim River, the very deep and broad river, is it always very deep and broad during the respectable long period? Is it possible it turned out to be a plain in certain period where the Brim River locates? What about the climate? Did the drought ever happen? Would the Brim River become low and narrow enough for crossing without a boat during the drought season?

Time leads to the evidence we find nowadays may be just a portion of the truth. Before a compelling conclusion to be drawn a lot of surveys are to be accomplished. The following investigations should not only be about other possibilities for the baskets to cross the river, but also comprehensively cover the climate, democratic, culture in this area, etc. Then the whole picture of the time when and after the Palean baskets appeared may be clear.
