In the lecture, the speaker talks about the protection effects of the vertical stripes on zebras. She strongly casts doubts on the arguments stated in the reading passage, due to the following reasons.

First, maybe it is true that the vertical stripes can produce optical illusion that can confuse the predators about the distance and size of zebras. However, it is useless for protection, because the predators of zebras such as lion never give up and they will chase zebras until zebras are exhausted. At that moment, zebras will be easily attacked.

Second, the predators of zebras do not use eyes alone to hunt and also they can depend on the smell of the prey to identify. Hence, even the pattern of each zebra's stripes blends in with the stripes of the zebras around it, the predators still can attack in the direction of their prey.

Finally, it is safer for zebras to stay in open ground since they can rely on the ability of fast run to flee away. In contrast, a place with tall grass will endanger them for the cause of the obstacle of tall grass. Therefore, the vertical stripes on Zebras are useless for the protection of them, which is a direct contrast to the view displayed in the reading passage.
