Issue 138
Do failures and mistakes are the only means of discovery and process? The author declares that successes and developments are only resulted from mistakes and failures, however, it oversimplifies this issue. The final judgement , in my point of view, should depends on a dialectic perspective, that is to say, discovery or progress is born in mistakes, nevertheless mistakes themselves cannot transform to success voluntarily. The truly pushing role was played by initiative and creativity.
Everyone fears failure, but breakthroughs depend on it. We should embrace them and learn from them. Through mistakes, we can find out where our faults lay, and make sure we won't fall down at the same place. To illustrate, let's see the model that coco-cola company set to us. In 1980s, in order to capture the soft drink market, coco-cola company spend almost 40 million dollors to introduce a brand new drink-- new coke, which gave up the 99 years' history of coco-cola secret ingredient. Their purpose was to adapt to the change that the customers now prefer more sweet. But these turned out to be a disaster consequence. The media and customs strongly condemned the unsuitably actions, and thus coco-cola had to face the first reputation crisis. Two years later, the crisis was somewhat ended with the words said by the manager," I have heard the customers' voices, and the old cola has returned back to you". All the purchasers were delighted about this, and so do the Wall-street. As a consequence, the stock value had reached the top level in twelve years. In a word, " as we take risks, there is something we must accept as a part of regeneration process". Said by a famous CEO Neville Isdell.
Furthermore, mistakes provide an opportunity to view a problem from a new vantage point and to try a different approach. "When one door shuts, another opens". China's reform is a case in point. After liberation in 1949, China, under the leader ship of chairman Mao, go on the way of state-run planed economy. As a result, since it is entirely inappropriate for the situation then, the whole nationaly economy was under rigid control and lasting poverty, the socialist ideal of social justice deteriorated into no more than an "iron bowl ". Recognizing this fatal mistake in Mao's economic policy,Deng Xiaoping took a new approach-- a gradual but dramatic reform, that is reform and open policy, and introduced some elements of market economy. After some years, this approach also turned out to be ineffective. Finally, after a series of trial and error, the Chinese government finally found out that market economy was the only choice for China. We have learned our lessons and now we are moving ahead of our mistakes, though different approaches may have tolls and sacrifices.
From the analysis above, I strongly commit the notion that we should analysis every failure to find its cause, have a refreshment of ourselves, and trial by error. To sum up, mistakes themselves do not lead to progress and discovery automically, we should use our wisdom and hard working to make the failure be our ladders to success.
