169The following appeared in a letter from a department chairperson to the president of Pierce University.

"Some studies conducted by Bronston College, which is also located in a small town, reveal that both male and female professors are happier
living in small towns when their spouses are also employed in the same geographic area. Therefore, in the interest of attracting the most gifted teachers and researchers to our faculty and improving the morale of our entire staff, we at Pierce University should offer employment to the spouse of each new faculty member we hire. Although we cannot expect all offers to be accepted or to be viewed as an ideal job offer, the money invested in this effort will clearly be well spent because, if their spouses have a chance of employment, new professors will be more likely to accept our offers."

In this letter from one of the department chairpersons of the Pierce university to the president of this school, the author suggested to offer jobs to excellent professors or researchers' spouses so as to attract them to work in this university and at the same time improve the morale of the whole faculty of this department for a survey performed by the Bronston university proved this method was effective in that university. While this suggestion seemed reasonable in the first glance, I still can not be convinced until the following aspects came into reference.

The first and foremost the author cited a survey to support his assertion without giving out the process and program of this survey. As a result we are not informed which kind of people involved in this survey, especially when this survey only focused on the professors who love that university the result of it may not deserve reference.

Even the result of this survey can be trusted; the author neglected there may be some difference between two small towns. It is entirely possible there are some environmental differences among the two towns, such as the environmental pollution state, the location the local primary schools, hospitals and other basic constructions, which contributed to the Bronton University can attract excellent professors though this method but the Pierce University can not imitation.

Another aspect should be got into consideration is that weather a professor want to work in a certain university not only determined by the job of his or her spouse, but also numerous other factors which the author did not mention, such as the reward, the reputation of a university and so on.

Finally, another flaw also should be recognized: attracting many excellent professors to a department does not mean the improvement of the morale of this school. For we can not remove the situation that all professors get into a certain department will be impacted by the former ones.

As all discussed above, the suggestion of this chairman is unreasonable. To assert his idea, it is better for him to list out the similarity of the two universities to support the feasibility of this method to Pierce University and take the other factors relative to the job choice of excellent professors into consideration.
