ISSUE40 "Scholars and researchers should not be concerned with whether their work makes a contribution to the larger society. It is more important that they pursue their individual interests, however unusual or idiosyncratic those interests may seem."

In this era of rapid social and technological change leading to increasing complex problems, people rely much on scholars and researchers to come up with solutions. In the other hand, the individual interest is very important for them. For scholars and researchers, they should keep a balance between their concern with society and their own interests.

There is no denying that individual interests are necessary for scholars in order to come up with new ideas and invent new devices. As Albert Einstein puts it, “interest is the best teacher”, this illustrates the points that the curiosity for something is a must for researchers to work and will give them motivation. What's more, many innovations, which have changed the whole world afterward, start with some idiosyncratic thoughts. For example, the world famous search engine Google first come into Sergey Brin and Larry Page's mind just because it is interesting. Simply put, without individual interests, scholars and researchers will lose their motivation in social and scientific research and many achievements would not be made.

However, it is morally dangerous if paying too much attention to the individual interests and ignoring the social responsibility. Common sense tells us that interests have no directions, in other words, we cannot judge whether something should be done or not only by interests. Just think about the problem in the front line research in life science. It can be scientists' individual interests to clone a human, but it is morally forbidden because it will lead to a disaster of the ethics. Similar situation appears in the development of nuclear weapons. In a word we cannot ensure that if some dangerous behaviors will be made during research just following one’s interests.

Not only may preference for individual interests be dangerous in terms of the ethic, but it can also serve to prevent many valuable findings and projects from happening. For example, the Apollo mission, which involved in many scientists and engineers, cannot be made just because of the interests of those people. There was a strength that tied them together to overcome the great challenge through it- the belief to make a breakthrough for all human beings. Interests can make a person more individual, while the desire to contribute to society makes us united.

To sum up, without the evaluation of social contribution, the achievements scholars made cannot be better assessed. Without a society that recognizes the importance of social responsibility for scientists, researchers will lose their directions. Thus, while pursuing their individual interests is necessary, it is equally important to have a view of the value they have to made for the society.
