It is a grave mistake to theorize before one has data

I fundamentally agree that the data should be serving as one of the most important factors in the process of theorizing, while, close scrutiny shows that some other stuff which with little bearing on the detail census would also take a large part in the research work.

No one can deny the data can provide the scientist much more valuable results in their theory. For one thing, compared with other methods of theorization, modern people are placing much more reliance on the subject matter than they used to do. One of the most apparent reasons for this circumstance is that certain amounts of theory and rules which may root in the observations and some other objects have gradually been overthrow with the development of modern technology and science. One of the famous example that can aptly illustrates this situations is the Aristotle's observation about the free fall have been prove to be wrong by the Galileo’s generalization of the large amount of experimental results. Furthermore, in many fields of research, the data should be serves as the prerequisite stuffs in the advert of theorizing. For example, in the economy realm, the scientists should focus their attention on the series of data that can precisely induce the entire trends and directions of the evolution of the economic condition, and most of the theory and conclusion in the economic have been based on these data and detail information.

Ostensibly, the data are able to provide all the stuff that is necessary in the entire process of theorizing, however, further reflections reveals that the imagination and assumption also plays the paramount significance in the theorizing.

In the first hand, imagination, as one of the most distinctive features of human beings when compared with other creature of the world, should serve as the necessary imputes of human civilization. The above assertion seems much more apparent in the historical fields and the arts work. As is so often pointed out that one of the primary goal of the historians is to reconstruct the real scenes of the past events or accidences which in most of the cases have little detail information or guidance let along the concrete data. Therefore, most historical rules and theory have been introduced not from the subject matter but the assumptions which based on the fractions of information and indications.

In the second place, the assumptions can help theoretic to predict the possible results and potential menace before the process of collecting data, such as investigations or other form of survey, have been engaged. To most of the process of theorizing, the imagine the elements and predict the future condition should be served as the first step in the entire research work, while, if these works have been neglected, the data and other detail information will loss its original meaning and also contribute little to the progress of human civilizations.

As discussed above, the importance of the data in the overall process of theorizing does not mask the crucial role which played by the other form of formations and theorizing. While, only through the collaboration of the various form of engagement can our human race to find the real theory and use it to strive for the thriving future.
