It seems to be an irreversible tendency that our society has been growing to be much newer and more complex. Most people aren't able to comprehend the details behind what they use which is updating nearly every single day, such as mobile phones and computers, while our ancestors in forests don't since what they have are just sticks and arrows. Instead of barter which is often regard as primary economic activities, modern economy has become so hard to control that even people received years of professional training fail to give clear prediction. Parties represented different classes debate and even fight with each other in our society while the structure of our ancestors is simple based on blood relationship. Considering this, it is apparently reasonable that an understanding of the past is just a waste of time and energy. However what I analysis below will demonstrate that the ignorance of the past cannot be a wise choice.

First of all, an better understanding of the past can help us avoid making the same mistakes which we have made before and handle the stubborn problems we are facing. In essence, history record all the events that have happened in the past, including failure and success. What we are facing now mostly have relation to the past, though some of them seem to be quite different, the essence hidden behind them is the same as what happened in the past. Based on the past, we can be informed of what we cannot do or what have to do at least in order to reduce the potential damage. The year 2009 experiences a new kind of flu virus which is called H1N1 for short. Governments all over the world take effective actions to control the spread the virus and research the vaccine immediately when the first infector was found. There is no wonder why they reacted so quickly, because human have been fighting with flu virus or other virus for thousands of years and accumulated enough knowledge and method to handle these emergency case.

Another merit of understanding the past involves in the inspiration gifted by history.
History is the foundation of contemporary era, people seldom create things totally different from what have been existing. Most significant breakthrough in human history are relied on the aspiration of previous work. For example, scientists across the world read numerous papers from data bases before they start their research, through doing this the get the information on what people have done and thus what additionally work is expected. Few scientists even get inspiration from the other fields which have little relation to their own areas. What's more, Coubertin, the father of
Modern Olympic Games, is inspired by Olympic festivals in Greece thousands of years ago and creates Modern Olympic Games .

However, we shouldn't just copy what our ancestors have done in the past. As time goes by, the world has changed greatly, what our ancestors have done doesn't go for the same problems we are facing. In the early of 20 century, when most western countries were still struggling in the morass of the Great Depression, a new giant called Soviet Union rose suddenly. After the Second World War, many countries eastern countries simply imitated the economy pattern of Soviet Union without considering their own conditions and the disadvantages of this pattern. The history shows the terrible result of their unwise choice. Furthermore, the advance of technology results in the birth of plenty brand new problems which we haven't met in the past and lack of experience to handle, such as the global warming.

In summary, the fact that the world is getting much new and complex is not the reason we ignored the past. On the contrary, we can absorb guidance and get inspiration from the past, we seems to be more expected in this crazily updated world. On another hand, we should also distinguish the difference between present and the past, rather than just copy the history.
