Global environmental collapse is not inevitable. To sustain the hospitable environment that is essential to life, people must learn that Earth does not have infinite resources. Earth’s limited resources must be conserved and, where possible, recycled. Furthermore, people must develop new strategies that facilitate environmental progress with economic growth. The future growth of the world depends on the development of sustainable conservation methods that protect the environment while also meeting the basic needs of residents. All these protections require the developed nations and developing nations to collaborate to ensure the process of environmental conservation. Thus, a single person can hardly handle the complex issue.
First, a single individual cannot deal with some environmental problems which require the whole society to solve. We may cite a single example of population growth to illustrate this point. Human population growth is at the root of virtually all of the world’s environmental problems. As the number of people increases, crowding generates pollution, destroys more habitats, and uses up additional natural resources. The most important factors necessary to lower population growth rates are democracy and social justice. Studies show that population growth rates have fallen in developing areas where several social conditions exist. In these areas, literacy rates have increased and women receive social status equal to that of men, enabling women to hold jobs and own properties. In addition, birth control information in these areas is more widely available, and women are free to make their own reproductive decisions. All these facts indicate that the population growth problem cannot be solved by a single individual, but the whole society.
Furthermore, efforts on environmental conservation need international cooperation. Dozens of international agreements have been reached in recent decades in an effort to improve the world’s environmental status. For example, in 2002 delegates from nearly 200 countries convened at the World Summit on Sustainable Development in Johannesburg, South Africa, to establish new sustainable development goals for the 21st century. They also negotiated to strengthen commitments from the governments of developed nations to provide aid for sustainable development. Without the international endeavor, human can hardly survive.
Admittedly, a single individual may make tremendous efforts to help improve the environment. Environmentalists explore into areas such as conserving energy, recycling, renewing natural habitats, leading healthier lives, making people’s backyards friendly to wildlife, and protecting endangered species. Volunteers gather to pick up litter, clean up streams, reservoirs, and participate in other environmental activities.
From what has been discussed above, we will see that environment issue is a serious problem which requires people to fight together. and Thus we can safely draw the conclusion that the environmental issue is too complex to be handled by an individual. |
