题目：ARGUMENT9 - The following appeared in a memorandum from a dean at Omega University.

"Fifteen years ago, Omega University implemented a new procedure that encouraged students to evaluate the teaching effectiveness of all their professors. Since that time, Omega professors have begun to assign higher grades in their classes, and overall student grade averages at Omega have risen by thirty percent. Potential employers apparently believe the grades at Omega are inflated; this would explain why Omega graduates have not been as successful at getting jobs as have graduates from nearby Alpha University. To enable its graduates to secure better jobs, Omega University should now terminate student evaluation of professors."


The author argued that the Omega University should recant its deed of allowing the students to evaluate the professors and gave out a logic explanation: as the professors would be evaluated by the students, they would inflate the marks of the students so as to get a higher evaluation from them. As a result the potential employers would not be interested in their students. Appareling reasonable as this argument seemed, there are some faces should be considered before get the conclusion safely.

In the first place, the author unfairly asserted that it is the evaluating of the students to professors which contributed to the increase of the students' marks. Admittedly this is a candidate factor, but it can not but assured. It is entirely possible that the increase of the student quality or they study hard they the prior students which made the increase of their marks.

Secondly, let's assume the evaluating program indeed one of the factors of the increase of the students' marks. I still can not be convinced the decrease of the job opportunities of the Omega university students due to their higher marks without any survey. There are no reasons for the employers won’t accept a student with higher marks in the common sense. May be the belay reason of this phenomenon is the major designation of the Omega university has broken down from the society or something like.

By comparing with a nearby university: Alpha University, which did not perform the evaluating program, the author concluded the Omega University can improve the job opportunities of their students by concealing this program. Apparently this is an unreasonable argument. The success of the students of the Alpha University in getting jobs can be caused by many other factors rather than this one. Numerous factors may lead to this output, such as the overall quality of the students of the Alpha university may be higher than the Omega University or the curriculum designed by the Alpha University has been more reasonable compared to that of Omega University. As a result a survey should be performed before getting this conclusion.

As discussed above this argument is unreasonable in logic term. To make it a more convincing one, the author should cite some survey concerning which contributed to the mark increase of the Omega University’s students, and the real reason of the fail in finding a job of the students of Omega University as well as the factors for the successful in getting job of the Alpha University.
