The author asserts that any means taken to attain a worthy goal is justifiable. He overestimates the function of a worthy goal and he ignores the justified means of attaining the worthy goal, so I do not agree with the author's assertion for the following reasons.
First of all, it is hard to define the standard of judging the worthy goal. Everyone is a special individual in the society, so we have different interests and varied goals. It is a worthy goal for someone while it is not worthy for someone else. For instance, making profits is a worthy goal for businessmen while saving money is a worthy goal for customers. Therefore, we can hardly find a standard to judge which goal is worthy. So we should attain the goals considering the law and virtues in the society to assure that we will not break any law or any virtue standard on the way to pursue one’s worthy goal.
Admittedly, pursuing a worthy goal is an enhancing power for a person on the way to success. One with a worthy goal will do his best to achieve his goal and realize his dream. When I was a middle school student, I admired my English teacher so much that I set being an English teacher as my goal. In order to be an English teacher, I practiced my English everyday and stock to this goal. Thanks to this goal, I am an English teacher now. Therefore, a worthy goal is like a guidepost on the way to one’s success.
However, although it is essential for one to set a goal and pursue it, we should take the means of attaining the worthy goal into account. Any means taken to attain a worthy goal is unjustifiable. There are lots of aspects we should consider much, such as society policy, society values. For instance, some criminals broke the law and deserved his wrong behavior because he thinks it is worthy to do that. If one just thinks about his own goal and take any means to attain it, it will produce an unfavorable impact on others, even on the whole society. If any means taken to attain the goal is justifiable, the society will be in chaos. For example, it is justified to reduce the air and water pollution. Yet in order to have clear air and water, it is unjustified and impossible to force all industries out of business because this will cause the risk of economic paralysis and widespread unemployment. Therefore, as a member in a society, one should take the justified means to attain the worthy goal.
From what has been discussed, we can safely arrive in the conclusion that it is an impacting power for one to pursue a worthy goal. However, one should take the considerable means to achieve his goal on the way to success.
