Issue 99
In a realm of life- whether academic, social, business, or political- the only way to succeed is to take practical, rather than an idealistic, point of view. Pragmatic behavior guarantees survival, whereas idealistic views tend to be superceded by simpler, more immediate.
1.
I concede that pragmatism has been accepted gradually in any realm, because it means a safer approach, less challenges and risks, comparing with idealism. However, the speaker ignores these two are equally important and scarcely contradict with each other. Anyone who wants to live a good life, not just survive, has to strike a balance between these ideologies.
It is true that we live in a world sometimes cheated even threatened by idealistic views. Pragmatism, with its predicable benefits, more reliability for its own sake, mitigates worries, and unloads the burdens from sophisticated problems in which we are struggling for survival. Consider, W. Bush government risked employee pension into capital stock. In retrospect, this ill-conceived proposal whose objective was to optimize and maximize resources in idealistic views, as it turns out, left us with more unemployment , largest financial crisis and pressing social issues ever. We are inclined to be cautious about doing everything whose objectives are too vague and whose potential benefits are too speculative. That is why employers prefer to hire staffs that already have working experience, not those green hands graduating from universities called "ivory town". Pursuing result effectively with less costs seems to comfort employers, voters, politicians- everyone struggle to earn a better live.
While pragmatic behavior is alleged its superior place, we should contemplate for what we are pursuing?Isn't those dreams we are longing for?--A better life, happiness, and so forth? Those dreams would also called wishes, ambitions, objectives ect. After all, they are idealistic views like backbones in support of human endeavors to act whatever pragmatically. It is idealistic views that sprout individual needs and interests, which further cultivate potential and talents and put them into action. If only we find a little fun or even get short-time success, passion and inspiration will spring out, since by human nature we are motivated to pursue those activities which we excel. Moreover, idealistic viewpoints have the magic to turn "impossible" possible. History is filled with unusual claims that turns out remarkable accomplishments by scholars and researchers who were doubted, scorned, even threatened by their contemporizes. Consider heliocentric theory at the cost of Copernicus’ inquisition and Bruno's death to stakes; Mandela's imprisonment for effort to antiapartheid and antiracism; Watson's dismissal for DNA double helix Model. It is with their spirits, passion, courage inspired by idealistic perspectives that we are taking our next step into the world.
Although idealistic opinions have much uncertainty and even bring many unprecedented consequences, it is because the risk that stimulates people's appetite for knowledge and endeavor. Whether idealism brings impetuses to develop or dangers to fall down, it depends on how we deal with it. If we take idealistic views for fantasy just as Robert Owen pursuing his perfect world—Utopia, without any consideration with reality, the more hope we hold, the harder we will hurt, because we are live in a society that turns out a little bit cruel, only through strong will combined with pragmatic action would ensure us keep the step with its pace. While we face the viewpoint correctly, idealistic views will be the catalysts helping us overcome difficulties, defeat failures, and finally speed up success.
In the final analysis, we are facing what our predecessors ever met before, with harsher challenges to face, more works to fulfill. Thus the speaker's assertion insofar as pragmatic behavior guarantees survival is necessary, yet not complete-- striking a balance with idealistic opinions will provide a colorful lives, more motivations and efficient action. |
