Is any means taken to achieving goal justifiable? People always try their best to attain goals in whatever way, especially when the goals are considered to be worthy enough. Whereas, in my way of thinking, not all the means are counted as legal and justifiable.
First of all, I concede that common sense tell us for the sake of achieving goal, any means is regarded as logical and reasonable. After all, attaining goals, whether it is individual or societal, can we satisfy ourselves both physically and mentally. Yet, my contention with the speaker lays on some situations- rare and extreme, in which we should think over the methods we used. Possible example rests on the use of nuclear weapon. Strategically, in order to reach victory of war, using nuclear weapon is undoubtedly the best choice as the explosion of nuclear reactor is accompanied with tremendous energy released. However, despite the power of nuclear weapon, facts should not be negated that the explosion would result in innumerable deaths and leave the survivals endless injury, let alone the destruction to the environment. Even though the use of nuclear weapon due to the pursuit of national benefits, through this method irrational and would be polished by the world.
Or think about another example which could reflects well on the issue. Being the champion is the eternal theme for all the athletes. Supposing that an athlete who want to get a gold medal by injecting stimulants before competition, he must take the risk of suspension of competitions for years, destruction of his reputation forever, which would be a buffets of fate. The punishment impress the athlete more than the failure got in the matches. By weighing the interests, a thoughtful athlete would choose a normal way to take part in the competition.
Above two examples illustrate the point that, we must weigh the benefits against the risks when judging the worthiness of a goal. By weighing the interests can we put forward the relative methods and bring them into effect. Especially when it relates to morality, conscience, and ethics, deeper analysis is needed for avoiding the moral or conscience dilemmas during the process of achieving goals. For instance, the invention of cloning technique is proved to have epoch-taking meaning to the development of biology science. It is named as the milestone of genetic discipline. Since the birth of the cloned sheep "Dolly" in 1996 and the conjunctive successes in primates cloning such as cloned cattle, monkey and rat, query about the human cloning is everywhere, and people start to worry about the influence brought to our societies after scientists give birth to cloned people. Obviously it is a challenge to human morality and ethic, thereby the invention of cloning technique remains controversial debates. A myriads of countries has prohibited the technique by explicit order or set a severe limitation toward the use of it. Chinese academy of science has definitely forbidden the research of cloning people, and advocates to separate the cloning technique and cloning people. All the examples above have underscored the fact that when we measure the worthiness of a goal, we should take into account of implementary methods and the negative effect resulted.
All in all, no matter what kind of object it is, social or individual, both weighing the interest and considering about the passive influence are essential.
