TOPIC: ISSUE160 - "The most essential quality of an effective leader is the ability to remain consistently committed to particular principles and objectives. Any leader who is quickly and easily influenced by shifts in popular opinion will accomplish little."

When it comes to what contributes to an effective leader, the author asserts the leaders must remain consistently committed to particular principles and objectives and at the same time do not pay much attention on the opinions of others. While it is very important to keep some essential principles and objectives, it is also necessary for leaders to pay some attention to the constructive suggestions of the others.


The common sense and the history events illustrated us that as a leader, consistently committing to some principles is the essential factors for the further achievement of the whole group. In fact, the basic principles and regulations are the frame of any organization: without law a nation can not be regulated; without class regulation the education progress can not be practiced; with out principles in the company field, the companies can not be organized and operated. As illustrated above, the essential principles of any fields must be committed. For a leader, if he give some one he is favorite a post using his power is called cynicism; getting profit with out consider the law is called bribe or appreciation, and so forth. In another aspect, if a leader dose not commit to some principles, it will undermine the group lead by him or her, for deed of this kind may at most cases harm the benefit of some people even most people in this organization. Take cynicism as an example, leader of this kind may get frustration in two aspects: firstly, his or her reputation would decrease; secondly, the quality of the people in his or her group may suffer undermine. Gandhi and Martin Luther King are cases in point, both of whom got their success in the social leadership by committing to the essential principles they adhered to.


Another aspect we should consider for a group or organization is the inspiration and ability to initiate. As a result the leaders of successful organizations must pay a certain attention to the constructive suggestions of the other people. In another term, listening to the different sound may help the leaders eschew some traps. Numerous successful leaders have the quality to concern the opinions and suggestions of the other people. Max could not establish his Marxism without consider the suggestions of Engels, especially in the economic field; president Reagan may not initiate his Star War plan, which resulted in a waste of the taxpayer and without any significance, if he have listened to the opponent opinions at that time. The two cases mentioned above told us the essential significance of listening to the opinions of others.


As what I have discussed above, a successful leader must have both the ability to commit to the essential principles of his field and the trend to consider the opinions and advices of the others. Only got the two quantities, can a person be a successful leader, whether in the business field, political field and social spiritual field.
