ISSUE 50 In order to improve the quality of instruction at the college and university level, all faculties should be required to spend time working outside the academic world in professions relevant to the courses they teach.

The speaker assert that in order to improve the quality of instruction at the college and university level, all faculties of colleges and universities should go out of the ivory tower and spend time working outside the academic world in the professions relevant to the courses they teach. In my view, it is necessary to put the knowledge into practice, but however, the speaker’s assertion neglects the importance of research and exaggerates the function of practice.

Before we go to a further analysis, we should admit the fact that different majors have different nature. We can briefly divided all these complicated intention of training into to two branches, the vocational training, such as mass communication, law, marketing, and the research training, such as astronomy, chemistry, math. The former are tend to have more connection with the society and people；however, the latter are more prone to individual lab work. Due to the different nature of subjects we can state that doing professional work outside the campus is not a good choice for both of them. The science get improved by years of lab research, such as students who major in math feel content after hours of theory lecture. In contrast, the humanities prospered by practice, such as the law school students will be bored and disturbed if their professor only impart them theory but not the example of case.

Additionally, the purpose of study is to practice. Professors as well as the students should not be a bookworm in spite of what the major is. The most outstanding example of putting knowledge into practice is the founder of Microsoft and the founder of DEEL. They both are majored in the computer science and established their company when they were college students. The reason that the can prosper their company is that they did not only has excellent professional skills, but they have creativity and initiative as well. However, there are also many famous figures that spent most of their lives in the lab and made indispensable inventions for the human beings, such as Albert Einstein and Newton. Unfortunately, in their old ages, since they feel that they are incapable of solving some problems which make them tend to research the religions and trying to prove that the mighty power is really exist.

Aside from this, there is no evidence to support that a professor’s instruction quality is largely improved after having a job in the relevant professions. What the professors did have a great influence on their students. For instance, an accounting professor was arrested for making false account for a private company few years ago. What’s worse, many of his assistance are his students. These immorally work is obviously violate the principle of teaching and smirch the image of teacher.




In sum, due to the different nature of majors, it is hard for all the college and university facilities have a job outside the academic world. However, if these college and university professors who have the necessity to work can choice a job honestly and do it earnestly, they will enrich their academic world and teaching stuff.
