No.50: in order to improve the quality of instruction at colledge and university level ,all fauclty should be required to spend time working outside the academic world in professional relevant to the courses the teach.




It is undoubted that with the development of our society, education gradually plays an more and more important role in one's life and the overall quality of community. Consequently, how to establish a higher education system is becoming a hot controversy among academic institutions, governments and ordinary people. While the speaker announce that all faculty should be required to attend some working tasks related to the courses they teach outside the academic world in order to improve the quality of higher education, I fundamentally agree, yet I maintain it is overstated to request all faculty to obey the proposal.



Admittedly, a teacher who have worked outside the academic world could make a contribution a better quality of education at college and university to a large extent. Since most of the knowledge taught by faculty ultimately should be used for a good occupation for us. Then if the faculty have some working experience in the areas they teach, they could have the opportunity to talk about it in classes and help the students better prepare for their job hunting. Moreover, the purpose of higher education is quite different from elementary or middle-level education. In university, we can not just sit in a ivory tower and wait for opportunities come itself. There is a large amount of knowledge besides academic study that we should learn. Therefore, to better educate the students, the teachers should improve themselves at first, and gaining a working experience can benefit students not only from the aspect of providing the techniques needed in the job, but also let them know how to deal with some social problems, such as how to handle relationship with others.



Although the merits of asking faculty to work outside their academic study is remarkable and advised, we should take this recommendation to far, for the teachers who have been already busy with their researches and experiments to accomplish. It is not rational to gain excessive burden to their shoulder. Take the faculty who works in the scientific areas as an example, most of them have to teach undergraduate students as well as graduates, however, they have to also pay attention to their own laboratories which filled with a myriad experiments to fulfil. For them, there is not much leisure time to spend on additional working out of the university. Such requirement would only make them could not focus on anything but complain about the heavy tasks. Therefore, getting to know the complex and various situation of different teachers is the fundamental premise to decide whether take the recommendation.



As to improve the quality of education, I suppose, on matter at what level, it should be also keep in mind that the education is no longer in a sense of teacher talking a lot in class and students taking note in order to get a high mark in tests as our society have been advancing greatly compared to hundreds of years ago. It is education to help and induct the students pursue their own interest and dreams and ultimately make a contribution to society and human beings as well as teach them the basic theories, each with the faculty's professional component, and with students playing a growing role over time. From this significant level of meaning, then we can come up with plenty of ideas to improve the quality of education at college and university level. For instance, let the students speak more in classes and do some group-based presentations could definitely gain many achievements of teaching practices.



To sum up, it is a good suggestion that request the faculty to gain working experience outside the academic world. However, what equally important is we should also consider the actual situation of each teacher and remember the essential purpose of education, then it is likely to find out other better ways to reach the goal as well.
