TOPIC: ISSUE43 - "To be an effective leader, a public official must maintain the highest ethical and moral standards."
Should the public officials maintain the highest ethical and moral standards? This topic is always fiercely discussed by the people. Someone claims so that maintaining the highest ethical and moral standards helps one to be an effective leader, while others hold the opposite attitude. As far as I'm concerned, though highest ethical and moral standards do sometimes contribute in the success of leaders, it is not always recommended to the leader due to other facts.
Admittedly, leaders with high standard of ethical and moral often usually enjoys tremendous popularity and support by his people. From the ancient times, moral and ethical standard, which is considered to the most reliable reflection of one's inner world, has been regarded as the basic criteria in judging a person. Thus, when it comes to the leader, it is more important for them to maintain high ethical and moral standards, for they need to win respect from others to maintain leadership. Take Nixon, one of the former presidents of America, as a vivid negative example, the revelation of Watergate scandal curbed executive’s power, eroding the confidence of public toward government. In the coming days, Nixon soon lost trust and supports from his people, for what he had done blemished his reputation; at last, he resigned under the pressure across the nation. In short, in most circumstances, maintaining high level of ethical and moral is necessary for an effective leader.
However, under some specific circumstances, remaining the highest ethical and moral standards may turn to be inappropriate for the leaders. Because for various reasons, the leaders have to concede the truth and fact, in order to protect his people and country.
Firstly, every country owns military force power to protect itself, thus the military secret are related to each country’s safety. Thus, it is naturally for the leaders to withhold such information from its people, preventing it from leaking to other countries and threatening the safety of the country. Secondly, when some information may cause hazards in the society appears, it is sometime necessary require the leaders to concede it from the public. In such cases, remaining honest and forthright may not ends in good results, thus it is sometimes not appropriate for the leaders to keep candid about everything.
Beside, as the leaders are often involved in political struggles, which are complex and fierce, it is not wise for the leaders to be such moral towards everyone, especially his enemies. According to Machiavelli, founder of political science, in politic competition, everyone seeks his own interest at the cost of others and an excellent politician should conceal his strategies from others in order to protect himself. In conclusion, as long as the politic competition has its own characteristics, it is sometimes necessary for the leaders to conceal the truth and even lie to others. Only in that way can he survive and lead his fellows.
In conclusion, considering the complex situations faced by the leader, I propose that it is sometimes necessary for the leaders to be not quite so moral and ethnic. It is not sufficient in building a successful and effective leadership. |
