Issue No.131
The arts (painting, music, literature, etc) reveal the otherwise hidden ideas and impulses of a society.
Generally we consider a whole human being or an ordinary person should consists both logic and imagination, so if science is training our left brain to make it more logic, then arts without daunts help us with our right brains to image more fantasy. Then clearly we may found that arts, broadly defined as painting, music, literature, etc, not merely reveal the otherwise hidden ideals and impulse of a society, but also reflect and inspire a society to move on.
Coming first to indicate that there is no daunt arts do indeed reveal the hidden ideals and impulses of a society by many aspects, by symbolize a character or sculpture certain heroes or heroines. Take the Renaissance movement as an example, during that time, artists, especially those in Italy, who hold opposite ideals that against the Roman Catholic Church would get persecution from the Pope, so they have hidden their ideology by saying that it is an culture renaissance of the Athens. Certainly they escaped from the inspection of the church while their works that contains their minds and thoughts survived and expressed ordinary people’s wishes—equality liberation and freedom shall finally turn over all this darkness and dictatorship. Go your way and let others talk, said by Dante, the famous Italian poet, who ignores the Church and his boss, the Pope was now considered as a legend also the pioneer of the Renaissance Movement. Another example is Leonardo da Vinci, the man who fulfilled the motto—A man can do all things if can wills, not only the painter so many supernormal paintings, include Mona Lisa, but also an inventor, an scientist. So if now conclude we have benefit from this movement, that is no more than greatly move our history forward and inspires the latter generation to create a better society, however, we truly can learn from this experience is hide your minds and ideals in your works and get more people’s identities and finally impulses or start a revolution.
The second we come to talk about other influences and effects besides reveal the hidden ideals and impulses which brought together with arts that we traditionally ignore. For instance, in most important or famous architectures during the Renaissance, one consistently sees a reflection of society’s ideas and urges, however in some modern architectures or paintings in recent centuries, especially after the 1900s,
one sees instead the artists’ personal and idiosyncratic vision of an aesthetic ideal. Picasso is a widely accept painter, during his early life time we see many famous painting, such as the Peace Dove, that reflect the common wishes of normal people, while in his latter life time we see more works that briefly show his personal vision of arts, so arts, in another hand, reflect or contain not only social but also personal ideal of the world. Of course, the world is not just fulfilled with comedies, sometimes we also watch tragedies happened. Van Gogh, without any daunt, was a brilliant artist, who was not been appreciated in his living while was admired after his death, puts too much personal ideals into his works. Later we found that arts with individual characters should also be treasured and become popular after then.
To sum up, due to the above mentioned reasons, which sometimes correlate with each other to generate an integrate whole and thus become more convincing than any single one of them, we may be comfortable to say that this assertion has merit, arts surely reveal the otherwise hidden ideals and impulses of a society, besides, also reflect and contain personal characters.
