Argument No.1
1The following appeared in a memorandum written by the vice president of Nature's Way, a chain of stores selling health food and other health-related products.

"Previous experience has shown that our stores are most profitable in areas where residents are highly concerned with leading healthy lives. We should therefore build our next new store in Plainsville, which has many such residents. Plainsville merchants report that sales of running shoes and exercise clothing are at all-time highs. The local health club, which nearly closed five years ago due to lack of business, has more members than ever, and the weight training and aerobics classes are always full. We can even anticipate a new generation of customers: Plainsville's schoolchildren are required to participate in a 'fitness for life' program, which emphasizes the benefits of regular exercise at an early age."

In this memorandum, the arguer recommends that we should build our next new store in Plainsville, for the reason that Plainsville’s residents are highly concerned with leading healthy lives. To substantiate the conclusion, the author provides the sales of local sports shop are at all-time highs and a local health club is full of business. Additionally, the author confirms anticipation of a new generation of customs- Plainsville’s schoolchildren. The argument is unconvincing for two reasons after a careful examination.

The major problem with this argument is that the arguer fails to convince us that we set new store in Plainsville should be profitable. First, the author reach the conclusion based on a previous experience which shown our stores are most profitable in areas where residents are highly concerned with leading healthy lives. Obviously, the fact that previous experience cannot represents future condition, because dramatically change in market is hardly unpredictable. It is entirely possible that economy depression leads residents have to put more attention on job but little notice on daily healthy diet. What’s more, common sense that profitability is a function of revenues and expenses. Maybe local same type shop like ours is enough, so that we cannot get more earnings for fiercely competitions. Or local citizens are always favoring of neighboring brand so that they would not choose to go shopping in a new store. Thirdly, although the fact that native health club and sports stores are full of business, these cases are only verify residents of Plainsville are prefer to participating physical fitness activities but rather mean local residents are highly concerned with leading healthy lives.

Another point worth considering is the arguer’s hasty generalization; we are informed that Plainsville schoolchildren are required to participate in a ‘fitness for life’ program, which emphasizes the benefits of regular exercise at an early age. However, children in school are not necessarily become new generation of customers. Maybe our storefront style is orthodox while children are preferred canton and lively style of store. Therefore, there is uncertainly that our new store would appeal countless of customers and obtain profits in Plainsville.

To conclude, this argument is not persuasive as it stands. To make it logically acceptable, the arguer should provide evidence to rule out that local residents not willing to take part in sports activities but prefer maintain a healthy diet to keep healthy. What’s more, the author should give information about the quantity and serve quality of same style store as ours in local, so make sure that proper business circumstance possible leads to profits.
