Issue No.207
207"Rituals and ceremonies help define a culture. Without them, societies or groups of people have a diminished sense of who they are."
As the rapid development in the modern society, culture has gradually become one key factor that we are focusing one and culture difference is considered as one of the most significant elements that distinguish people. In retrospect, culture is normally determined by the rituals and ceremonies. However, in the modern society, we still cannot deny the influence that original rituals had brought to culture. In addition, the sense of culture is not as significant as its previous one due to the globalization.
Admittedly, rituals and ceremonies were the one of the most important specifications for a group of people. In the past, people belonged to their own tribe and each tribe was almost independent with others. From this point of view, people had distinct sense of where they were located and who they were. In addition, with the limit of technology, there was less opportunities to communicate with each other, thus, causing extensively sense of culture.
However, it has gone into the 21th century already with high technology and convenient transportation and such senses haven’t been as intensive as before. Put simply, times have changed. For example, the most famous ceremony in the western country is Christmas which is to commemorate the birth of Christ. Nevertheless, it seems that Christmas has become the common ceremony around the world due to the globalization like culture exchange and expedient internet. Therefore, some ceremonies have been shared and some culture has been recognized by all humans.
In addition, with acknowledgement of culture, people even get married across the nations. There are increasing hybrids born currently, which were almost forbidden in the past that marriage across tribes was prohibited. As for those children, the sense of who they are is definitely more comprehensive. On the other words, they won’t feel lonely and helpless if a sort of culture does not exist anymore since they have accepted various rituals and ceremonies in the world. The ABC (American Born Chinese) may be an aptly group of people. By observing different cultures, they would consider themselves to be Chinese even they are not in the western rituals and ceremonies. From this aspect, the sense of who we are is not as intensive as before.
In conclusion, as previously mentioned, rituals in the past developed the culture for a group of people and they were isolated by the limited technology, thus, resulting in strong sense of who they are. However, times have changed currently. Basically, not only may the globalization be a dominant trend like culture exchange, but it also alters our values and ideas defined for the society and world. |
