TOPIC: ARGUMENT35 - The following appeared in the summary of a study on headaches suffered by the residents of Mentia.

"Salicylates are members of the same chemical family as aspirin, a medicine used to treat headaches. Although many foods are naturally rich in salicylates, for the past several decades food-processing companies have also been adding salicylates to foods as preservatives. This rise in the commercial use of salicylates has been found to correlate with a steady decline in the average number of headaches reported by participants in our twenty-year study. Recently, food-processing companies have found that salicylates can also be used as flavor additives for foods. With this new use for salicylates, we can expect a continued steady decline in the number of headaches suffered by the average citizen of Mentia."

In this argument, the arguer advocates that new using of salicylates would continue steady decline in number of headaches suffered by the average citizen of Mentia, for the salicylates are in the same chemical family with aspirin, and for that a twenty-year study show a steady decline. Although this argument might seem reasonable at first glance, it is in fact ill-conceived. The reasons are stated as follows.

At the first place, the author assumes that salicylate can treat headaches by giving two reasons. One is that salicylates are member of the same chemical family as aspirin. Another one is that a twenty-year study shows that salicylates are correlated with a steady decline in average number of headaches. Although these two reasons are relevant to the function of salicylate, they are not substantial enough to evident that the salicylates actually cure or alleviate the headache. For the first reason, members in same chemical family may share similar structure, but do not necessarily have same function. For the second reason, the correlation between salicylates and steady decline of number of headaches disenable the arguer to make sure that salicylates are the factor which leads to decline. Surrounding-changing during these twenty years, enhanced living condition, improvement of medical service, and more regular lives are all possible factors of number of headache decline.

In the second place, the arguer assumes that using of salicylates as flavor additives for foods is expected a continued steady decline in the number of headaches. Even if the evidence turns out to support the foregoing assumptions, the arguer cannot predict a continued steady decline in the number of headaches. For that environment may be different with last twenty years, such as more intensive working pressure might increase the rating of headache. It is also as possible that people share diverse body constitutions in different ages and different generations, so the salicylates may not have same efficiency when treat headaches twenty years later. Since the mechanisms of illness and medicine are quite complex, without accounting for and ruling out these and other alternative possibilities, the arguer cannot deduce such conclusion.

The last but not the least important, the arguer make the prediction just by imagining that mount of salicylates increased in people’s diets by being used as flavor additives might have better effect. No supporting by theories and no more experiments could evident that the effect are related with mount of this medicine, also, the different condition may lead to different effect, for that chemical properties would change when used as flavor additives. To reach the cited conclusion, the arguer must do more research in order to give a responsible and meaningful recommendation.

To sum up, the arguer’s argument mentioned above is not based on valid evidence or sound reasoning, neither of which is dispensable for a conclusive argument. Also the prediction is lacking of relatively entire consideration. In order to draw a better conclusion, the arguer should reason more convincingly, cite more confirmed evidences, and take every possible consideration into account.
