TOPIC: ARGUMENT132 - The following appeared in an editorial in the local newspaper of Workville.

"Workers should be allowed to reduce their workload from 40 to 25 or even 20 hours per week because it is clear that people who work part-time instead of full-time have better health and improved morale. One store in Workville, which began allowing its employees to work part-time last year, reports that fewer days of sick leave were taken last year than in previous years. In contrast, the factory in Workville, which does not allow any of its employees to work part-time, had a slight increase in the number of days of sick leave taken last year. In addition, a recent survey reports that most of the store employees stated that they are satisfied with their jobs, while many of the factory employees stated that they are dissatisfied with their jobs."

The author suggests that we should reduce workers' workload in order to improve their health and morale. To support the advice, the author studies a store and a factory. In the store, employees were allowed to work part-time, and then fewer days of sick leave were taken last year than previous years. To contrast, employees of the factory couldn't enjoy the right, and have a slight increase in the number of days of sick leave taken last year. However, the argument has some fallacies, which I will discuss in detail as follow.

To begin with, author fails to establish the causal relationship between the workers' work time and their health. For one thing, in the store fewer days of absence for sick is not necessary leaded by the part-time job. There are many other possible reasons for the lower absence. With reducing of the workload, the workers can have more leisure time at home. If they suffer some disease during the leisure time, they will not need to report it to the store. Then the absenteeism is lower but the workers' health is not improved. For another, in the factory, a slight increase in the number of days of sick leave is also cannot proof that workers' work time correlates with their health. It is possible that the slight increase just a random change whose occurring cannot indicate anything. It is also possible that the number of days of sick leave increasing is because other factors in the factory such as the factory have more workers to do than previous years. The author fails to rule out these possibilities. Therefore, without more information about the, it is arbitrary to judge their health situation according to the absteeism for sick.


Secondly, the arguer fails to prove that the workers' perspective of their works is due to workload. There are many other factors which can influence the morale of the workers such as salary or pressure. It is possible that employees in the store have higher salaries than in factory, which can cause the formers satisfied with their jobs while the latters are dissatisfied with their jobs. Therefore, it is unreasonable to judge that the perspectives of the works contribute to the workload.

At the last, the advice of the author may be infeasible for most stores and factories. The purposes of stores and factories are pursuing profits as many as possible. If reducing workers' work time cannot ensure the mission of the works can be fulfilled, most of stores and factories will not accept the advice. The arguer provides no evidence to show that reducing workers' work time does advantages to the stores and factories. Therefore I don't think the advice is feasible.

To sum up, the editor should provide more information about the relationship between the workload and the workers' health and morale. If it can improve the workers' health and morale, the new workload should be fit for both the workers and the enterprise.
