TOPIC: ISSUE28 – “Students should memorize facts only after they have studied the ideas, trends, and concepts that help explain those facts. Students who have learned only facts have learned very little.”
WORDS: 523          TIME: 00:55:00          DATE: 2010/7/17 16:41:46

The issue is based on the discussion of whether ideas, trends and concepts are precondition of learning facts. While the arguer alleges that facts learning should be supported by abstract concepts, and facts only means little, I, however, agree with the claim partly.
In the early time, when there was little main trends existed in the world, people first learned the facts happening around and tried to explain the unique concept behind the various phenomenon. Aristotle, for example, as an ancient Greece philosopher, first observed many facts through his sight, touch, and hearing. After absorbing and assimilating the phenomenon through thinking and summarizing, he put forward some theories. Therefore, with the help of learning the facts, we can gain the knowledge directly for facts are more detailed than ideas, trends, and concepts.

If we want to tap a new field rather than further study others’, it is more useful to first learn the facts, because facts offer several dimensions of information and from the same facts we can refine different concepts. For instance, Newton got theory of gravity from the falling the apple while others got pain only, and if Newton did not think over the reason leading to this phenomenon, we may not find the theory. Hence, if you question the truth of a theory or want to create a new one, the most effective way is to learn the facts which contain countless information within your endless thought.

On the contrary, if one want to study the existed theory, it is better to place priority on learning ideas, trends and concepts. For those abstract information is the refined knowledge through which we can directly understand the essence of various phenomenons. So are the cases in most situations we come across. When we study at school, we are taught theories first and trying to recite them and then we do practices to embody them because we don’t have so much time as the author do to understand a theory by years of observing. We need to learn the theory soon. Therefore, the imposed theory may not at the first place that can cause a deep thinking, but the later facts learning will make them more concise and unforgettable, which is the way of education nowadays in most schools.
When it comes to us, we should combine them wisely. Franklin, a US president, once said: education should enlighten people with facts and abstract conclusion, and either of them along means nothing. As I paraphrase, like the title say, students only learned facts that have little obtainment because facts contains original information which is hard for us to understand the essence. And if we learn abstract things only, we, as an old Chinese saying goes, will lose in our mind and our knowledge are isolated with surrounding facts, which in another word means the lack of use. In that way, while we studying, we should not only embody the ideas through facts, but also explain the essence that can reflect the phenomenon.

To sum up, although they are two dimensions of one phenomenon, abstracted dimension and detailed one, learning facts and learning ideas, trends, and concepts should not be seperated if we want to understand the knowledge deeply. In addition, teachers should keep an eye on the method of education to make sure the combination of learning facts and concepts.

The issue is based on the discussion of whether ideas, trends and concepts are precondition of learning facts. While the arguer alleges that facts learning should be supported by abstract concepts, and facts only means little, I, however, agree with the claim partly(既然作者部分同意题目的观点,就不应该用however这样表转折的词了吧,去掉however保留while).

In the early time(times, in the early times很早以前), when there was little main trends existed in the world, people first learned the facts happening(happened) around and tried to explain the unique concept behind the various phenomenon. Aristotle, for example, as an ancient Greece philosopher, first observed many facts through his sight(observation, sight应该表示视力), touch, and hearing(hearing应该也是听力的意思). After absorbing and assimilating the phenomenon through thinking and summarizing, he put forward some theories. Therefore, with the help of learning the facts, we can gain the knowledge directly for facts (, which) are more detailed than ideas, trends, and concepts.
(这段作者持支持的观点,很早以前人们可以考学习fact学习很多知识)

If we want to tap(tap into) a new field rather than further study others’(others), it is more useful to first learn the facts, because facts offer several dimensions of information and from the same facts we can refine(是不是redefine) different concepts. For instance, Newton got theory of gravity from the falling the apple while others got pain only, and if Newton did not think over the reason leading to this phenomenon, we(he) may not find the theory. Hence, if you question(quest) the truth of a theory or want to create a new one, the most(有点绝对) effective way is to learn the facts which contain countless information within your endless thought.(个人觉得issue还是多以第三人称叙述为好,少出现Iyou)
(其实这段和上段一个意思,fact 有很多信息,可以用来开创新的学科。实际上Aristotle最大的贡献就是开创了很多学科)

On the contrary, if one want to study the existed theory, it is better to place priority on learning ideas, trends and concepts. For those abstract information is the refined knowledge through which we can directly understand the essence of various phenomenons(phenomenon). So are the cases in most situations we come across. When we study at school, we are taught theories first and trying to recite them and(去掉) then we do practices to embody them because we don’t(do not) have so much time as the author do to understand a theory by years of observing. We need to learn the theory soon. Therefore, the imposed(强加的?) theory may not at the first place that can cause a deep thinking, but the later facts learning will make them more concise and unforgettable, which is the way of education nowadays in most schools.
(这段我觉得作者理解有点偏差, 题目中的学习ideas, trends and concepts的意思就是花很多时间去搞清楚facts的来龙去脉)

When it comes to us(当谈到我们的时候?), we should combine them(facts and theories) wisely. Franklin, a US president, once said: education should enlighten people with facts and abstract conclusion, and either of them along means nothing. As I paraphrase, like the title say(says), students only learned facts that have little obtainment because facts contains original information which is hard for us to understand the essence. And if we learn abstract things only, we, as an old Chinese saying goes, will lose in our mind and our knowledge are isolated with surrounding facts, which in another word means the lack of use(the lack of use的意思应该是很少使用,而作者这里的意思应该是缺乏实践的能力). In that way, while we studying, we should not only embody the ideas through facts, but also explain the essence that can reflect the phenomenon.
(这个观点还可以,但是应该先说只学facts的确学得很少,应当将两者结合)

To sum up, although they(there) are two dimensions(aspects?) of one phenomenon, abstracted dimension and detailed one, learning facts and learning ideas, trends, and concepts should not be seperated (separated) if we want to understand the knowledge deeply. In addition, teachers should keep an eye on the method of education to make sure the combination of learning facts and concepts(这句在文中没有提到).
