TOPIC: ARGUMENT209 - The following recommendation was made by the Human Resources Manager to the board of directors of the Fancy Toy Company.
"In the last three quarters of this year, under the leadership of our president, Pat Salvo, our profits have fallen considerably. Thus, we should ask for her resignation in return for a generous severance package. In Pat's place, we should appoint Rosa Winnings. Rosa is currently president of Starlight Jewelry, a company whose profits have increased dramatically over the past several years. Although we will have to pay Rosa twice the salary that Pat has been receiving, it will be well worth it because we can soon expect our profits to increase considerably."

The recommendation claims that because Pat Salvo (PS),
a president of the Fancy Toy Company, having made profits fallen in the last three quarters of the year, should resign and make the position for Rosa Winning (RW), because under her leadership the Starlight Jewelry's profits increased dramatically. The recommendation further asserts that by doing so their company will surely make profits. However, I find this argument logically problematic in several aspects.
To begin with, the duration of RW and PS in their positions are different. PS worked for the toy company merely for three quarters of the year, but RW worked for the jewel
company for three years. The arguer fails to see that making profits requires time. Maybe PS has invested a comparatively long-term sales projects that it will make profits in the future, which can not be recognized at the moment. If so, to ask PS to resign is rather unfair to her and could result in damage to the company.
Furthermore, to compare the profits in two different realm without knowing relevant details is meaningless and unrealistic. PS was working in the industry of toys, whereas RW was dealing with jewelry. The manager neglected the other possible reasons to PS's failure, including that the competition on the toy market are becoming fierce; that the whole environment of toy market suffered a depression that some company even suffered financial deficit, let alone making profits. In this case, PS's profits, though decreased, may still have advantages over other toy company. On the other hand, the RW may benefit from the prosperous jewelry market to make profits. Without ruling out these possibilities the recommendation is unpersuasive.
Finally, the recommendation proposes that they can soon expect profits to increase due to the employment of the new leader-RW. However, even though RW used to be expert at jewelry sales, it does not necessarily indicate that she is familiar with toy market. It is entirely possible that RW made the profits according to her ample experience in jewelry market. But in the other area such as the toy realm, she may be mere a green hand. Then to expect profits from her lacks consideration.
To sum up, to make the argument persuasive and sound, the manager still need to provide evidences that PS is on earth incapable of the leadership; and that her failure is not due to the time and field. Moreover, to further convince us he should provide support that RW's talents in toy markets are better than PS’s. |
