170. "The surest indicator of a great nation is not the achievements of its rulers, artists, or scientists, but the general welfare of all its people."

When we talk about a nation, the first idea appears to one’s mind is the military force and economy of the nation. When it comes to the strong nations like the USA or Japan, their leaders are always most referred in the newspapers and magazines. For example, Obama, the president of the USA, frequently appeared in the CET—6 in china. On the flip side, we should focus on the great achievement of the civilized countries as Greece and Italy, these are main symbols of the nations. We often ignore, however, the general welfare of all its people at the same time, in fact, they are best factors showing overall strength of the country.

There goes a saying that water can make a boat capsize despite holding it. As for the boat of the government, people is the water that decide the up or down. Only improving all people’s welfare will make the society sable and manifest the prosperity and strength of the country. A case to this point is USA, which has suffering the economic crisis in 1935, then the government had taken steps to improve the welfare of people. As the result, their economy had started a long booming, moreover, great achievement had taken place in the field of science and art while leaders’ impacts are widely spread.

Common people are not very concerned about the achievements of scientists and artists before they solve the problem of eating and wearing, in addition, scientists or artists are represents of common people, the low welfare can’t ensure they’re dedicated to the research or performance. Even the field of science has a great development without a good welfare of people, their nation will still lag behind. For instance, the Soviet government was under the system of whole country, they made use of the resource all over the country supporting the science and art, however, its civilians even couldn’t meet their own need of eating, no wonder their policy didn’t last long.

Admittedly, the achievements of its rulers, artists, or scientists promote the willpower and energy of the whole country. During the second world war, Poland musician created an amount of anti-fascist music to inspire the people to battle against the enemies bravely, at the same time, its scientists insisted to do their researches and receive the great achievement. In addition, nowadays, under the circumstances people’s basic welfare are protected, people take more attention on the achievement of leaders or scientists, which is the best indication of nation’s strength.

To sum up, the fundament indicator of a great nation is the general welfare of all common people, after this aspect, the achievements of its rulers, artists, or scientists can be considered as another to affect the nation’s overall strength.

56. "Governments should focus more on solving the immediate problems of today rather than trying to solve the anticipated problems of the future."

The discussion of issue whether governments should focus more on solving the immediate problems of today or trying to solve the anticipated problems of the future has come into vogue during the last decade. Determining whether should or not could be weighted in many aspects. Despite the speaker asserts governments should focus more on solving the immediate problems of today, I hold the different opinion.

The governments’ power comes from people, so they should be responsible for people’s live（lives）, the most fundamental method is to protect the immediate authority such as the lowest life expense or medical insurance, that’s why candidates always emphases the issue in the election. In addition, we won’t have time to think about the anticipated problems of the future if we can’t solve today’s problems, in other words, no present, no future.

However, the future’s problems should also be recognized in order to benefit the next generations. A best example to this problem is the protection of the environment, which contacts the life atmosphere of descendants. While we make use of natural resources to make profits, we can’t ignore our grandchildren’s sustainable development. Nowadays, there appears a large number of pollution which results from immediate interest, however, people can’t realize the damage they made to the next generations, if things go on like this, our descendants will have no clear water to drink and no wood to utilize. Thus, much should be done to try to solve the anticipated problems of the future.

We can conclude that both immediate problems and future ones should be treated seriously. To deal with today’s problem is a pressing matter of the moment, this urgent matter can’t be ignored otherwise the present age will take burden to next generations. Similarly, future’s problem should be attached importance as well. No matter how minor it would be, it takes relations to future world, that’s what we can’t delay.

To sum up, the task of top priority is to deal with the immediate problems in a right way, at the same time, future’s affairs should be taken into account.
