It is generally accepted that imagination is important in most professions and academic fields. However, knowlegde always have greater significance as it’s the base of most discoveries and achievements. Imagination could function as an assistant in the process of studying knowledge. Sometimes knowledge such as geometry and transforms between coodinate systems are too abstruse to be mastered in the form of numerics and formulations, yet if students can visualize those knowledge with their own imaginations it would be much easier , for those knowledges are intuitive and obvious as images. The mostly known role imaginations play is in the area of innovation. Those new ideas and new combination of technologies unprecedented are the driving forces of comtemporary society, and it is usually considered impossible to achive those innovative ideas without the help of imagination to break the boundaries of what the others have achieved. However, the lack of imagination themselves are not a defect so severe as the lack of knowledge which could actually render people as inadept. It is generally because many fields of profession and academic do not require imagination , although imagination could be a good bonus. For example, an EE professor without proper knowledge about his or her major couldn't survive in that area at all , and it can not be changed by imagination. Yet an EE professor without imagination yet are very familiar with most aspects of EE could do a lot of things: he or she could be a good teacher, could be a good engineer , could be a good consultant , and could contribute a lot to the academic worlds by analysing works of others, or by make improvements to current existing theories which do not need too much imagination.
例子很有趣
Another fact people usually neglect is that knowlege must be the foundation of imagination, or imagination are meaningless. For example when watching Star Wars people can't help but admire the imagination of George Lucas, yet since he is not an expert in the area of aviation, those X-Wing fighters are not based on knowledges of mechanics of fluids and cybernetics , thus could not fly in the real world.Imagination without knowledge couldn't do much more than entertainments, and that is unacceptable in professions and academic fields
. 总有点觉得说即便在创新领域,想象力仍没有知识重要有点难以服人,但是你的例子写的都很详尽。
What’s more, even for the area of innovation, still knowledges are more important than imagination according to my own experience. Not only that critical innovations are based on knowledge from all potentially relevant areas, they are actually the result of deep-in understanding of knowledges. For example, cybernetics which now controls all our vehicles and weapon systems is initiated by Wiener. The key concepts of cybernetics come not from imagination but how human and animal controlling their movements: act, analyse the feedback ,then act based on the feedback again, until the goal is reached. Cybernetics is the result of Wiener's deeply understanding of how ourselves behave and the understandings of how electronic components like capacitors work. If one understands the basic mechanism of the problem he or she is facing , which requires great knowledge, not much imagination is needed to create even revolutionary innovations. To sum up, although usually emphasised by people and indeed is a good bonus, imagination are not so important as knowledge is in professions and academic fields. After all , the gap between experts and outsiders are formed not of imagination but of knowledge. |
