To understand and define a culture we usually turn to their(its) special traditions and different rituals depending on comparison with other cultures. Knowledge of at least one other culture is needed as the issue claims, however, there is no necessity and(yet) unreal to understand one culture distinctly different from your own.
Firstly, the deeper your understand(understanding) of other cultures you have, the more objective prospective you will have on(是不是应该是in) your culture. Objective prospective offer you more dimensions by comparing with other cultures to analyze and understand the civilized and uncivilized elements in your culture. In that way, culture through comparison will more or less
(be) filtered, getting rid of the bad one on one hand, maintaining and assimilating the good one on the other hand. That is essential to understand the(a) culture. For example, during the Qing Dynasty, emperors refused to understand and accept European culture, considered as barbarous and uncivilized, and held the unchangeable though that China was the ruler of the world and he was the ruler of China, while the Europe had highly improved the working efficiency through Industry Revolution. As a result, those emperors could not have an objective and impersonal view with their own culture, and accordingly culture became more and more backwards. In that way cultures should open their doors for guests, if they want to better understand themselves(if one wants to better understand one’s own culture).
Moreover, as there are various of cultures existed(干掉) in the world, we should widely study and understand those cultures, especially those claimed as successful ones, and they will offer us a thorough understanding of our culture. If digesting and assimilating a different culture will offered a comparison of advantage and disadvantage dimensions, then more cultures will offered an all-sides understanding, which is undoubtedly positive. Comparing with culture of German, we can recognize the benefit of regulation; comparing with culture of America, we can know creation's power; comparing with the culture of North Africa, we can understand why people live on enthusiasm, all of which offered sharp mind(这什么意思?) to our culture in various fields and by comparing them we can know whether our culture is deficient on those sides. In that case, various cultures not only brings different traditions, but also offer new minds and concepts that will ameliorate(这个词不对) our understand(understanding).
(感觉这段意思和上一段有点重,都是讲从其他文化中了解自己的文化)
Whether we require personal knowledge of distinctly different from our own is suspected. On the first place, I suppose(不是假如,而是认为吧,但是看后面你又说如果有完全不同的文化…) the absolutely different culture does not existed for any culture in the world raised from people's daily lives and daily lives in one place cannot totally different from those in another-due to our similar physical demand and nature of human beings. If it is said that there is a distinctly different culture as the issues claims, it may be a culture whose traditions and habit in some fields are sharply(apparent) different. Comparing with culture like this will for sure provide a new concept and mind defying your original one, which by this comparison may make us better understand our culture through the opposite. (后面这半段就没怎么看懂了,culture应该没有完全不同的,这有个文化融合的问题)
However, if we first and only turn to those culture wanting(, and want to) have a direct understanding (of them), an aberration may be caused. Because some concepts of those two cultures are mutual excluded, believing one means defying another and step by step if we devoting a lot on those differentiating them(这句改一下) we will accept one culture more. As this kind of acceptation accumulating, our objective analysis(As this kind of acception which depended on our subjective analysis) may lastly turn to prejudice and jingoism and worship of other culture caused by prejudice is no doubt unhelpful to understand a culture. Therefore, it is, if not unwise, unreasonable to turn to the distinct culture firstly and solely.
To sum up, if we want to understand our culture, deep and thorough understand of other cultures is essential for they provide comparison. Then what is the most important is by better understanding our culture we can make our culture more civilized. |
