Should the primary goal of the technological advancement be to increase people's efficiency as a result everyone has more leisure time? I agree with this assertion insofar as that compared with previous ages, the technology not only free people from heavy dull workload, bring convenience to our life and work but also improve people's overall efficiency. However, the primary goal of technological advancement varies(is various) and should not be limited only to efficiency. Moreover, in reality (加个sometimes,因为你前面是同意作者观点的) the technological advancement crushes(不知道这个词可不可以指消耗时间) people's leisure time.
(本段开头说 “I agree with this assertion insofar…”应该是部分赞同Issue观点,但是Moreover, in reality… 又在反驳没有闲暇,所以加上sometimes)
To begin with, the process of producing and laboring is the process of improving the efficiency. Facing with work, intelligent human tend to attempt different methods and invent new tools and management methods. Entrepreneurs are experimenting with every possible means in order to lower the input, increase the output and shorten the procedures of manufacturing. In this case we may conclude that under the guidance of profits, the technological advancement are(is) accelerating the efficiency directly or indirectly like an invisible hand. As to the whole society, the advancement of technology may enrich the amounts and assorts of goods the civilians utilize(utilized by civilians, utilize是及物动词,平民也不应定指), and thus people may enjoy the fruits of technology.
On the other hand, careful consideration reveals (that) even though the increase of efficiency is an important goal of developing technology, there are a myriad of(这个词是不是用得有点过了) significant aims as well. In the second world war(Second World War), the penicillin came to market due to the discovery of the new antibiotic, which saves millions of lives on the battleground. In this case, it is aimed at rescue(be aimed at doing 或 be aimed to do) people and improve people's medication conditions that the advancement is made, rather than improve the efficiency of treatment so the nurses may have more leisure time(这些护士估计没有leisure time,他们还要照顾这么多伤员。仔细看这还是一个强调句,我觉得语序有点不对,改一下: it is aimed to improve people’s medication conditions to rescue them, rather than improve the efficiency of treatment that the technologies advancement made). (感觉这个例子用在这里不贴切,提高医疗环境也是提高治疗的效率嘛,死的人更少了) The introduction of digital camera makes photo taking more friendly and convenient, which enables more amateurs to record their special moments, rather than improving the efficiency of photo productivity. There are various targets at the beginning of the technological introduction that to define any of them as the primary goal is incomplete and improper.
What comes at the third place is that in most(some) circumstances, people living in the high technology time are enjoying less leisure time than before even provided increased efficiency. There is no denying that the advances technology calls for more skilled and knowledgeable workers. In order to keep pace with the development people have to recharge themselves in their spare time. One typical example the information technology(IT)realm. A successful IT company the workers have to be young in heart and active in mind(用活到老,学到老是不是好些?), and get ready for new changing environment and challenges all the time. The workers in such companies usually have little personal leisure time because the technology is updating every minute so they have to learn new things and adjust themselves. There are many other similar areas as well. In this case the technology is depriving people of their leisure time instead of bestowing more.
To sum up, our social productivity and efficiency as goals have greatly improved by the advancement of technology, whereas there are more other initial aims we should not neglect. Furthermore, even though the technology has improved the efficiency than previous years, people's actual leisure time has decreased due to the high working standard and competition pressure. |
