I-131"The arts (painting, music, literature, etc.) reveal the otherwise hidden ideas and impulses of a society." WORDS: 566
TIME: 不计时 Arts take a diverse range of forms and serve various purposes. For instance, non- motivated arts, originating spontaneously from human nature, are to express social or personal spirituals and emotions, while motivated arts, carrying certain utility intentions, are for entertainment, business promotion, etc. The argument is too general to assert arts display social ideas and impulses. As far as I am concerned, most non-motivated arts can function as a mirror for hidden social thoughts, and motivated arts cannot due to their practical purposes. Generally speaking, most non-motivated arts are the external exhibition of artists’ inner sense about the politics, spirits, and philosophy of the existing society. Thus, they do reflect the social ideologies and impulses. Take the classical European ballet for example. It is characterized by the female dancers rotating on the tiptoe to leave the floor of the stage as much as possible, which demonstrates the Christian philosophy of throwing off earthly bandage and ascending into heaven. It would not be difficult to understand if you note that ballet originated in an era when Christian dominated Europe. Another related case is the famous novel- Gone with the Wind, which reveals the Civil War’s affection on people’s spiritual transformation. Scarlett once lived a carefree life; however, the war claimed her parents’ lives and brought her humiliation and starvation, which finally reshipped her to be selfish, mercenary, and strong. Some others may argue that: how could you rely on a fictional story? My answer is that this literature is based on the author’s father’s true experience in the Civil War. I concede that art may not exactly replay the thoughts and impulses of past societies, but at least it reveals them. Yet not all non-motivated arts could uncover the hidden social ideas and impetuses. Undeniably, there exist some works of art created according to the artists’ personal emotion, but rather social ideologies. A persuasive case here is Beethoven’s musical composition- Moonlight Sonata, which was created for the lady whom Beethoven was deeply in love with. This great work of music mainly illustrates Beethoven’s personal romantic feelings, and has nothing to do with ideas on the social level. Moreover, arts’ demonstrative ability is based on the premise that we can understand them. In fact, some artists create the works of art so unconventionally that we cannot even interpret. How could arts beyond comprehension demonstrate social ideas and impulses? Furthermore, motivated arts are incapable of revealing social ideologies, especially when it comes to business arts, decorative arts, and entertainment-oriented arts. Business works of art, such as advertising art, are destined to draw a certain group of customers to purchase products or services; thus cannot comprehensively and objectively reflect the social thoughts. Similarly, decorative arts emphasis aesthetic values, rather than social elements. Say, in order to decorate the office, one puts up simple but tasteful wallpapers and lays beautiful potted plants in the corner. Could you get macro social ideology related conclusion from his decorative art? I cannot. At last, it is also true with the entertainment- oriented arts, such as horror movies, which are produced purely for leisure enjoyment. All in all, the special purposes of motivated arts deny their ability to show the overall thoughts in a society. In conclusion, various goals of arts decide that we cannot simply rely on some any art to reveal social ideas and impetuses, because some arts are demonstrative while others misleading. |
