Do you agree or disagree with the following statement? Students should not take part-time jobs while they are studying in universities.
Many students do part-time jobs after school or do odd jobs during the school holidays nowadays. Some people argue that social activities should distract students from their study so they should not take part-time jobs while they are studying in universities. However, I think working experience of part-time job is important for university students.
To begin with, practical experience can help people discovery what they are really interested in and avoid many roundabout route in their job career after school. Take us Chinese students for example; we seldom have a chance to contact the society when we are studying in primary and secondary schools. When it is time for us to choose a major in college, the majority have no clear idea about what the major is about and which career is suited for us to study. Most of us just choose a major in a hurry according to our parents’ opinion. Then numbers of students rush to university just finding out they have no interests in their profession. Some others don’t even recognize they can do much better in other field of career. Thus, the social practice experience which helps students learn themselves better is much more important.
Moreover, part-time job can show students what is going on in society which could help them build a good judgment and creative vision in order to keep pace with the time. There is no denying that science and technology is developing rapidly at present-day society. Until an intellectual's book knowledge is integrated with practice, it is incomplete or indeed very incomplete. A research has shown that almost 3/4 of the knowledge that students in Business College learned at school would become out of date when they are graduated. And many skills required in the job even do not exist when they are junior in college. Therefore, it is very important for students to take part in social practice when they are studying in the universities.
Finally, doing part-time job can also help students build a strong and positive personal character. When working in society, students are exposed to numerous kinds of problems and trouble, and they cannot find a shelter to escape from that situation. Instead they must think out a way to solution problems as soon as possible. It is really a train for their mental development. Besides, students can make friends with a lot of people at the same time which surely would benefit them in their later job career.
Admittedly, doing part-time job would take a lot of time and energy which should be used for studying or relaxing. But the advantages of it overweigh its disadvantages. And if students can arrange their time properly and have a definite outline of what they want, they could avoid most the disadvantages easily.
In conclusion, I totally support the proposal that students should try to take some part-time job during their college years. Not only can they learn much more about themselves and the society, but also they can harvest a sound personal quality, beautiful friendship as well as a brighter future.
