In China, the history of books could date back to 4,000 years ago. At first books were made from hides, then the bamboo. About 1,000 years ago, the printed book made of paper first appeared, consequently culminating in a great impact on Chinese society. Now, due to the technology development, the printed books were more and more challenged by the electrical books. As to whether students will not use printed books, I am of the opinion that printed books are of permanent importance for us.
First, compared with electrical books, the printed book has its own advantage of easier approach. We don’t need any external power to run them. In contrast, electrical books cannot be accessible without the power. In my view, this drawback poses a great obstacle to electrical books’ ambition for completely replacing printed books. For instance, once I made a long travel to Tibet, bringing a PDA which supports electrical books. But after only 4 hours reading, the battery was used up while my journey was lasting for 20 hours on the train. In the following time, I had to bear the damn boring. I got a big lesson from that travel. After then, whichever travel, short or long distance, I would bring printed books rather than electrical books with myself.
Second, out of the consideration for collection, students will not abandon printed books. I know that many students have great interest in books collection. We students are willing to put valuable books on the bookshelf other than in the computer, ensuring that we could review and refer to them at any time. For example, my major is Physics. Thus, my bookshelf is teemed with printed books related to the classic mechanism, quantum mechanism, the relativity, and the Physics experiment. Whenever I come across a question, I would refer to relevant books on my bookshelf. Undoubtedly, these printed books benefit me a lot in courses study.
However, though printed books still hold an important status in students’ life, we cannot deny that the electrical book plays a more and more vital role in our life. Many students give preference to electrical book in terms of general reading since electrical book is cheaper and easy to share. These two contribute to its unrivaled strength. But, according to recently survey, the cost students allocate to printed books exactly never decline though there is an impact of electrical book. The answer may be that electrical book is just a supplementary to their reading, without prejudice to their purchase interest in printed books.
In summary, I concur with the point that students will keep using printed books in future. Electrical book has become a more and more important part of student life. But, it does not contribute to a challenging threat to printed books based on discussions above.
