Do you agree with the following statement? Newspapers and magazines are the best way of learning about a foreign country.

提纲——不同意:
1.政治立场不同会导致信息不属实
2.记者自己不够理解,会误导读者
3.还有其他方法了解一个外国,报纸杂志不是the best

Although considerable kinds of newspapers and magazines are available nowadays, ranging from hard news to entertainment news, can we say that only via those two tools have we learnt about a foreign country? I don't think so.

Political standpoint is the first stumbling stone. As we all know, different countries have different political standpoint, which can more or less influence the truth of reports on newspapers and magazines, especially the reports referring to politics and military. Let's recall the time during the Cold War. We can compare how American, the most powerful rival of Soviet Union, and Chinese, the loyal follower of Soviet Union, described this country on their newspapers and magazines. Obviously, American made effort to condemn how rude the behavior of SU was, while compliment and admiration were ubiquitous in Chinese media. If a reader get two pieces of newspaper respectively from America and China, s/he would definitely be confused: what on earth is Soviet Union like? Clearly, sometimes newspapers and magazines cannot be fully depended on when a reader is curious about a foreign country.

Even other messages haven't connection with political standpoint, the fact that reporters misunderstand them can also be another obstacle. Owning to lacking enough relevant knowledge or background, reporters may only command the surface of things rather than the core of them so that what they post on newspapers and magazines can mislead their readers, for example ,the things about unique culture in an unnamed village of India. Therefore, maybe an article introducing a foreign country you are reading on New York Times isn't the true colors of it.

Getting rid of those two stumbling stones of different political standpoint and misunderstanding of reporters, newspapers and magazines still cannot claim that they are the best way to learn about a foreign country. Because we also master other means, such as television, broadcast, and Internet, that can compensate for the disadvantages of newspapers and magazines. Through eye-catching pictures and videoes on TV and Internet, an accident, a kind of culture, or an occurrence can be perceptible by people's visual and auditory senses. We can see the grass sprinkling with dew which is glistening under the sun; we can hear the first twittering of birds in a forest of a foreign country, all of which are impossible for print media. Plus, the Internet welcomes every people, so if a report talking about a foreign country is posted on the web, everyone, as long as s/he is interested in or really know about this topic, can express her/his idea. When various thoughts collide with each other, we can get more information, if not the true color, of this country. This feature of Internet is also fatal shortcoming of newspapers and magazines.

To sum up, from the three perspectives, political standpoint, reporters' misleading, and other good media, we shouldn't only rely on newspapers and magazines during the process knowing about a foreign country. After all, a whole country involves too many factors that need many forms, rich words, vivid pictures and videos, and long times to completely describe it.
