TOPIC: ARGUMENT7 - The following appeared in a letter to the editor of the Clearview newspaper.

"In the next mayoral election, residents of Clearview should vote for Ann Green, who is a member of the Good Earth Coalition, rather than for Frank Braun, a member of the Clearview town council, because the current members are not protecting our environment. For example, during the past year the number of factories in Clearview has doubled, air pollution levels have increased, and the local hospital has treated 25 percent more patients with respiratory illnesses. If we elect Ann Green, the environmental problems in Clearview will certainly be solved."

The letter suggested residents of Clearview should vote for Ann Green rather than Frank Braun since Ann Green may solve the environmental problems. In order to support the suggestion, the author listed some social problem during the past and analyzed the background of the two persons. Although this argument might seem reasonable at first glance, it is fact ill-conceived. the reasons are stated as follows.

To begin with, the letter's conclusion is based on the assumption that the member of the Good Earth Coalition will intend to protect the environment. However, the arguer does not supply any evidence to confirm this assumption. It is quite possible that Ann Green who is a member of Good Earth Coalition doesn't give the highest priority to solve environment problems. To the contrast, Frank Braun may want to protect environment though he isn't a member of the Good Earth Coalition.
Without ruling out these possibilities, the arguer cannot bolster the recommendation.

What's more, the arguer assumes that current members are not protecting environment for the reason that there are many environmental problems appearing during the past year. However, there is no guarantee that it is necessarily the case. It is possible that many other factors brings the environmental problems such as increasing of population or problems left by history. Although the current members also have took many policies to protect the environment, some problems still appeared. Without accounting for these possibilities, the author's assumption is unconvincing.

Last but not least, it is also unreasonable that the environmental problems will certainly be solved which was asserted by the author. Solving social problems
need to meet many requirements, such as the condition of the society, the execution of policies and the abilities of the leaders. The author just simply give the assertion and neither any conclusive scientific evidence nor any convincing evidence is provided to affirm this assertion. So it is reasonable to doubt what the arguer assumes will not happen in reality. It is just as possible that Ann Green isn't able to give a suitable scheme to solve the environmental problems.

To sum up, the arguer should give more valid evidence to prove Ann Greem is more suitable for mayor than Frank Braun in order to let residents to vote Ann Green. The assumptions of the author are not persuasive since being a member of the Good Earth Coalition doesn't mean intend to protect environment and no one can guarantee the environmental problems can certainly be solved by Ann Green while Frank Braun isn't able to solve the environmental problems.
