In today's modern world, the problem in job-market seems to be increasingly pressing, given the high unemployment and relatively low salary. Many people assume that university should take on the responsibility of preparing their students well for working. However, I think it is unreasonable. The following examples and arguments serve to strengthen my opinion.
Firstly, focusing on career skills would undermine the pure academic atmosphere in campus. Though I donnot deny that many people seek a further education in university in order to get a lucrative and decent job immediately after graduation, there is still no reason to make a college serve to this purpose. College should be regard as the paradise of knowledge, research, spirit pursuing, rather than a miniature of society, which is abundant with various social climbers and money businesses. Therefore, we should not encourage college to focus on working preparation.
Moreover, the real responsibility of a college is to impart formal knowledge and guide students to find a suitable method of learning, during which career skills is simply a byproduct. For example, I am interested in Journalism for a long time. However, my college does not offer a major in it, for the reason that to be a journalist need not majoring in journalism. If I have a unique major in science and with real knack in reporting, I can find a job better. Because today most journalists work in special area, like business, law suit, scientific research. It is obvious that whether I could get a good job has little to do with school preference on working skill.
The last bust not the least, many career skills can only be learned during true experience. Consider the interview. How to complish a perfect interview with employers is not a easy question which can be taught through several classes, especially for those who are weak in communication. Only through true situations one can mature quickly.
In the final analysis, a university should retain its unique characteristics---the pure environment and the solitary education goal. Working experience would be taught by the university of "society".
