2.29do you agree or disagree with the following statement? College or University should offer students more preparation before they start working.
“What buffet are to consumers that is colleges are to students.” Don Pahle, professor in faculty of business and economics, Hong Kong university, gave a fantastic metaphor implying the role of universities and colleges. Hence, never should universities become the place only provide students with abundant professional skills in a certain field. If all the factors like the improvement of self-learning skills, personalities forming and the uselessness of preparation are considered, a larger proportion of job preparing, in my opinion, should not be the cornerstone in college life.
As is known to all, passing on to students the key to open the doors of knowledge lays more values. From my perspective, it is how to learn that weigh, instead of what to learn. That is to say, providing pedagogic vectors should be the pursuance of professors in colleges. For instance, Dennis Woods, one of my good friends, graduated from Cambridge in 2009. His major is math. Nonetheless, he became an investment counselor later, and works in an investigation bank in Singapore. Once we chatted on the phone, he told me that the most important thing he learned from college was not the theories from textbooks, but critical thinking and problem-solving methods taught by his professors. It is this kind of skills that makes him be accustomed to a new area immediately, catching the core of investment skills. Therefore, it would be better when professors focus on teaching tools of searching messages, picking up professional skills in a short time, so as to push student to get self-realization.
Besides, forming characteristics play a role of increasing importance in universities life. As an editorial published by the China Daily commended that the most essential function of teachers is
to form students' characteristics and to demonstrate the virtue of love, respect and sincere. A recent survey can back this point up. The Chinese employment research center carried out a research among more than three hundred companies and institutions. The research shows that approximately 68 percent of companies pay close attention on the personalities of their employees while only 35% of companies require the interviewees to possess professional skills. A warm-hearted team player, a self-motivated person with leaderships would be welcomed even though they do not have enough professional knowledge in temporary.
Furthermore, preparation given by professors may not count a lot. Frankly speaking, professors can only offer imitate exercises to students, and in most of time, they generally teach students the principles of all walks in society. A recent survey, conducted by John William, professors from Nanjing University, further supports this view. According to his report, merely 7% employees regard the skills gotten from schools are extremely useful for their careers. Over 45% of individuals agree that working places are best platforms to show employees how to polish their professional skills. Therefore, inevitably, the preparation provided by the professors is ineffective in general.
To sum up, all the available evidence analysis confirm a sound idea that it is not necessary for college to offer more preparation for future job. Instead, it is of great benefit to provide pedagogic vectors as well as shaping students’ personalities, cultivate their moral and academic world view, values, outlook on life.
