The video camera provides such an accurate and convincing record of contemporary life that it has become a more important form of documentation than written records.
Although the video camera provides an accurate and convincing record of contemporary life not only for the nowadays persons [present people] but [also] for our descendents, it is unfair to claim that the video has become a more important form of documentation than written records after shortcomings of it are revealed by a close scrutiny.
No one is able to deny that video camera, combining the image and sound together, is one kind of great innovations of recording contemporary life. Video documents could provide people vivid and authentic description of what has happened; thus be able to put the audiences into the real scenario of the past events. It will provide, not only for us ourselves but [also] for our descendents, the most reliable information of the history. Consider, for instance, ten years ago on my birthday party, my parents filmed the process of the party, so I could review the happiness of that time thanks to the result of the advanced technology. In short, the video camera serves as an innovative form of documentation.
On the other hand, there are several inherent foibles of this form of documentation. Firstly, the vivid video might fail to provide as much imagination as written records could, which is very important under some circumstances, especially [when reading] literary works such as fictions and poetry. The video documentation provides us the authentic events; however it is too real to the literary works, which require the imagination of readers. As a famous writer once said (as I paraphrased) "different people have different opinion of the same fictions ". As a result, it is not hard for us to understand the result of a recent survey, conducted by the Chinese Social Academy, which shows that nearly 66% percent of respondents are not satisfied with the new teleplay transcribed from a famous fiction in China.
Secondly, unlike pens and notebooks, the video camera, at least now, is not easy to carry; thus it cannot ensure that people could use video camera to record every important event. Common sense tells us that it is not possible for people to carry the camera everyday no matter where he or go. However you may not foresee when and where a valuable event will happen, so it is almost impossible to record everything in video. On the contrary, pens and notebooks may be more accessible than cameras when urgency happens. Even if there is no pen and notebooks at hand at all, people could remember it and write it afterwards which is impossible for a video documentation.
Thirdly, there are a great number of historical records which are documented as written records that are hard to convey [be converted] to video documents. Prior to the 20th century, there was also a lot of historic information, almost all of whom are written records [改写了一下:which was in the written form]. It is not practical or not economical to convey them all to the video camera.
In sum, although the video camera provides us an innovative alternative for documentation, it is gratuitous to claim that it is more important than written records as both media own advantages and disadvantages. It is more sensible for us to combine them together since none of them could replace each other. |
