Rituals and ceremonies play an important role of helping people to define their culture. Without them, societies or groups of people have a diminished sense of who they are.

With the progress of globalization, some people begin to lose their culture identity. Without the rituals and ceremonies, people may loss the sense of belonging. Every 4 years’ Olympic opening ceremonies is not merely simply a sign that games begin, but much more important, the display of the host country's culture. From Barcelona to Athens, from Seoul to Atlanta, they have their own unique styles. If all the opening ceremonies become the same, they'll lose the significance. As well as people contact, if we don't shake the hands when we meet, don't kiss each other when we show our affection, we’ll lose the sense of belonging, which can finally lead to culture identify crisis. In a word, if a culture loses its special rituals and ceremonies, it may become more easily cause lack of culture identity.

With special rituals and ceremonies, people can easily identify their own culture. For example, marriage ceremonies in China and west countries are different in form. In Chinese traditional marriage, the new couples have to do three times of obeisance: first to the god and earth, second to their parents, and third to each other. In the contrast, western new couples usually exchange their rings. This difference reflects the disparate view of marriage between oriental and occidental. The three times of obeisance reflect traditional Chinese show their view of the whole world. First obeisance to the god and earth means they put the respect to the deity at the principle place. Second to parents shows the respect for the elderly, which is Chinese traditional virtue. And the last is to respect each other. However, occidental exchange the rings. That means devotion to each other and loyalty to marriage. In one word, in these rituals and ceremonies, people find their own culture identity which inherits from generation to generation.

Admittedly, rituals and ceremonies are not the only ways that help define culture. Other things such as tradition, value system, history, education and family background can define cultures as well. To avoid the losing culture identity, the education system has the responsibility the help our youth the build an image of their own culture, so that the can find themselves in the rapid progress of globalization and westernization.

To sum up, with the rapid progress of globalization, it is a pity that more and more youths in developing countries tend to accept western ideals rather than themselves’. The whole society has the responsibility to help them to find their own culture identity. And rituals and ceremonies just play vital roles in define them.
