Rituals and ceremonies help define a culture. Without them, societies or groups of people have a diminished sense of who they are.

I agree with the speaker that rituals and ceremonies is helpful to define a culture, however, I disagree with that society or groups of people would have a diminished sense of who they are. In my point of view, rituals and ceremonies do play a role in culture, but not the essential one.

Admittedly, rituals and ceremonies which is part of culture is helpful to define a culture. Culture is composed by various forms such as arts, cultural traditions, regular thinking, and so forth. Rituals and ceremonies serve as one facet of culture is useful for people to get a whole view of a culture. Take wedding, which is a representative and important part of rituals and ceremonies, for example, different nation which possess different culture enjoy different wedding ceremony: Western country prefer to use white color to show the purity of love while the Eastern like China is in favor of red to give a image of happiness and excitement; Some regions take ring as the justify object which is different from silk clothes that used by some other areas; some like quiet , some like crowd... people could feel the difference between cultures and it is helpful to historians and anthologists to study cultures.

However, rituals and ceremonies is not so important that culture mainly depend on it. In the era of booming development of science and technology, environment, thinking of people and culture is influenced by the progress. Holding rituals as people did decades before become more and more difficult because spare time is getting less in modern lifestyle, fewer people is familiar with the traditional procedures of rituals and ceremonies, and many people think it is unworthy since those traditions could be subtracted to a email or a phone by tools of this information age to save time. Actually, in my observation, the part of culture, rituals and ceremonies, is becoming less important and losing some of their sole traits in the step of societal development. Influenced by the Globalization, many third nation world countries is giving up their traditional ceremonies, for example, rarely could people find the traditional furies ceremonies which is took place by the simple fire-fury. In a word, rituals and ceremonies could not be a full representative of the whole culture.

In today American culture, you could find traits of Italian or British or Asian culture, but in the process of mixing and re-mold, various cultures and different ceremonies become wholly new ones, and people in American are absolutely aware of who they are. We could still determine people by their skin color, their accent, their thinking frame, language, and so on.

In sum, though rituals and ceremonies could help define a culture, without the help from them, people could still understand themselves and their culture in many other ways.
