"The study of history places too much emphasis on individuals. The most significant events and trends in history were made possible not by the famous few, but by groups of people whose identities have long been forgotten."
Does the study of history place too much emphasis on individuals? Do the groups of people contribute to the most significant events and trends in history?
Base on the current conditions, maybe we pay more attention on the individuals. Many scholar spend much time on searching the famous individuals in the history, and many people only remember the famous people when asked the most significant historical events; even children are requested remember the individuals' name and it is one content of the examination. But there are some reasons result in that status. At first, because the famous individual really contribute to the historical events and there are some files or documents, or something else remained till today, which will help people to know the historical events including the famous individual. While other ordinary people have not opportunity, so the scholars have no way to know more things about the group of people. Eventually, most of emphasis is placed on the famous individuals who have more research possibility. Moreover, remembering the individual will help people to remember the whole history events. When talked about Lincoln, people naturally think about the Civil War and he freed from the Negro; when talked about Hitler, people will think about the World War II and the Jew who died in the war. So it is seems not a very bad things to place emphasis on the famous individuals.
Furthermore, we must admit that some individuals really do great contribution to the development of the civilization, especially in the science, art realms. Such example in science field is countless: Edison, who invented the lamp, brought the light to us; Darwin, who advanced the evolution theory, let us know how does the human being come into being; and so on. And in most case, the group people do not play an important role. Because most problems are specialize problems, which need the experts with the special knowledge and enthusiasm to solve. While common people have not the talent or ability to do that. On the contrary, groups of people might give a side effect on it sometimes. When Einstein released his theory, most people criticized it and believed Newton Law was always right. Many artists were not accepted by the contemporary people because their works beyond the period. Under this circumstance, the most significant events in history were made by the individual, not the groups of people.
Not only in science and art realms, but also in the political realm, the individual play an important role on promoting the change of the society, especially they are in the leader position. Their decision will affect the whole state, the country, even the whole world, even if sometime the leader might take into account of the people's minds. The example in point is Hitler, who lead to the World War II in a large extent, if Hitler were not exist in that time, maybe the war would be changed or delayed. The great Chair Mao, led people fight for the freedom. Without his effort, maybe Chinese people still struggle for the freedom now. From the above example, it is clearly that the individual is a significant part in the history.
The famous individual is important, but no one can deny the importance of the groups of people, especially in political realms. Without the contribution of groups of people, the famous individual cannot gain any achievement. Even it is the best idea, however, the point is turning into reality, and the procedure depends on effort of the groups of people. Just like the example cited above, without thousands of solider, Hitler cannot gain any success on the battle. Without the advocacy and support from lots of Chinese people, Chair Mao cannot set up China by himself. Just like one famous people said, "it is the people give me the strength to stand here, to do everything for them". We can find the huge influence of the groups of people.
To sum up, the history is made up both famous individuals and anonymous groups of people. |
