issue160 领导与大众 打击面挺广的一题 欢迎来拍! 有拍必回!
【160】The most essential quality of an effective leader is the ability to remain
consistently committed in particular principles and objectives. Any leader
who is quickly and easily influenced by shifts in popular opinion will
accomplish little.
What makes a leader successful? Is the eminent merit of toughleadership? Or, is the great affinity of being a popular friend withhis or her people? As far as I am concerned, no matter which stylerepresents the leader better, it is most remarkable for the leader tohave the ability to retain a balance between persisting his or her ownand listening to his or her people. Otherwise, he or she will possiblyfail to accomplish well or even cause a counterproductive effect.
To begin with, any society that regards the results for the one andonly criterion of judging a leader would be considered unfair andimmature for doing so. In fact, the benchmark of assessing a greatleadership is not only by viewing (can be removed) what the leader has achieved in hisor her tenure, but also need an all-around inspection of his or herways of achieving those feats. For example, a mayor of one of thebiggest cities in north China, who is in charge of millions of citizensin such a metropolis, is now achieving his feats by constructing aviaduct system over the city. It is supposed to be a brand-newcityscape and also a great convenience for this area in the future. However, lacking a comprehensive programming plan, the city and thecitizens are now suffering from an extra pain of endless reconstructionand rebuilding, which is a huge waste of money and energy. The mayor, the chief leader of the program who might be praised for such a greatviaduct system is now being widely criticized by his people. Such kindof leader (leaders), although may accomplish some feats in his tenure, shouldnever be considered to be an effective leader.
On the other hand, a popular leader does not necessarily come up to asuccessful leader. It is entirely harmful for a leader to beirresolute, though he might hold a good will in (at) the beginning. Thetruth is that few decisions can be made if one dreamed to pleaseeveryone. Leader is the one who makes the decision. Without suchability to judge the situation but instead trapped into the morass ofnumberless suggestions and requests, the one in the leading positioncannot be called an eligible leader. Or, even worse, the leaderfrequently shifts his or her decisions in popular opinion (this sentence doesn't seem providing any support to your standpoint). Such aleader is more like a ship without a rudder, no matter how much efforthis sailors put into thrashing, the sea craft might only circle aroundwith no direction.
Let us simply take a look at those well-known successful leaders insome field. Donald Trump, undoubtedly the greatest realty magnate, performs a typically eminent leadership. He is the one ("the one" excludes others alike. "a person" might better serve here) who knows how tobalance the suggestions and decisions. In order to better analyze andestimate the situation and make a reasonable decision, he would listento others' suggestions and judge them by himself. Then, he will make adecision on his own and accordingly take the risk by himself despiteinevitable objections from others. The fact is that he becomes anonesuch in the realty world, though he has made some bad moves atfirst. No wonder why millions of people are desirous to be hisapprentice to learn his leadership.
In sum, feat is not the benchmark of appraising successful leader, noris popularity. The key of leadership is to utilize suggestionscarefully to make decisions reasonably-----the balance of listening andpersisting.
Your paper is well organized. Good job!
