In the rapidly progressing new century, modern education is laying its emphasis on cultivating the students’ ability to question and criticize with their independent idea, rather than pushing information into their brains, while some people asserts that it inhibits the harmony of the society. I fundamentally disagree with this idea because I think the ability of questioning and criticizing endows students to jump out of the set rules to find new ways to attain the harmony in this dynamic society.

Our society now is changing rapidly and continuously with technological progresses, making social harmony rarely a static status but a dynamic one. The billow of information technology, gene technology, and other new techs has changed and is changing the life style of people, the form of business and industry, and the structure of society at an unprecedented speed, in which circumstance, new social conflicts are coming out all the time, requiring people to find new ways to solve them. For example, within no more than ten years, Internet service has become a must in people’s lives, with easy access to Internet bringing easy access to abundant unselected information, treasures and rubbishes alike. One may think the abundance of information is great with a traditional way of thinking, however, new problems arise such as people have to spend much more time on filtrating the information that they have less time to do other things, or adolescence are easier to approach pornographic information or even drugs which is unwanted to their age. To solve these problems, can we just forbid the access to Internet just as we did to alcoholism or drugs? The answer is opposite. What we need is innovative questioning and critical evaluation, so that we can find new ways to solve these new conflicts.

Therefore, the ability of questioning and criticizing encouraged by education helps students to find new ways to solve the new conflicts in the changing society. A social problem results from the existing social rules or structure, which do not suit the progress of society. Simply obey can never change these rules which used to be beneficial to social harmony and solve the problem. We need to courageously question the set rules, critically evaluate them, contemplate the situation innovatively, and find a way out. The anti race segregation movement in 1960s America may serve as best illustration to this point. Started firstly from universities, the anti race segregation movements advocates the equal rights of African-Americans under the spirit of common equality. Isn’t race segregation a common and traditional practice for over a hundred years under which the society was in harmony? However, as economical and political progress going on, if this traditional practice had been maintained, not only the country’s spirit would be profaned, but also the conflicts between African-Americans and other groups of the society tensed, that no social harmony could be reached at last.

Admittedly, while encouraging students to question and criticize, education should also teach students modesty and open-mindedness, so that students can learn with open heart the goodness of tradition to avoid the unnecessary social turbulence caused by self-righteousness. Students of younger age might be immature and easily drown in their own imagination lacking of social experience that false judgment and over-radical actions may be made. Radical behaviors like revolutions are never the only best way to solve problems.

In conclusion, Education should be an encouraging and innovative process rather than just foisting information into students mind. Teaching students to question and criticize with modesty and open-mind, can help to find new ways to solve new social problems to promote social harmony.
