Government should preserve publicly owned wilderness areas in their natural state, even though these areas are often extremely remote and thus accessible to only a few people.
Recent years, the governments are always short of money, especially those of underdeveloped countries, and there are many emergent issues that need to be addressed. As a result, some people claim that government should not preserve publicly owned wilderness areas as these areas are of little use to our society. However, I tend to agree with the speaker's assertion that government should preserve publicly owned wilderness areas in their natural state for not only the environmental reason but also for the economic reason.
For the environmental sake, it is the government's responsibility to protect the environment, and preserving publicly owned wilderness areas in their natural state is one important aspect. With the booming of human population and development of industry, the wilderness lands in their original state are less and less [fewer and fewer], thus causing some environmental catastrophes. Consider, for example, many wild plants and animals are distinguishing as they are losing their natural habits gradually, According to the statistics from the UN, there is estimated 1 species of animals are disappeared from the earth. Moreover, the human behaviors tend to intimidate the natural balance on earth on which all kinds of lives including our human beings rest [on] to thrive. Nature will take revenge against us. Consider, for example, the temperature of earth recent years is increasing gradually because of the large amount of CO2 emitted by the factories and automobiles. Wilderness areas in their original state, under these circumstances, are important for us because they are the natural habits of some animals and they play pivot role in maintain the natural balance on earth. In short, wilderness areas in their natural state are very important for our human beings and should be preserved by the governments.
For the economic sake, with the development of technology, it is highly possible that some of the wilderness areas may have some economic value in the future although they are only accessible to only a few people now. Some of the potential natural resources which are not discovered by people nowadays might be in the wilderness areas. With the development of technology, these resources might be of great use to our society in the future. As an illustration, in ancient times, the importance of petroleum and gasoline resources is not discovered by the temporal people. However after the industrialization, people had developed various kinds of using [ways to use] them and they became the most important energy for our society nowadays. So it is highly possible that some potential natural resources which might be very economically important for our society in the future are stored in the wilderness areas and without the preservation, some of them may be deteriorated and less valuable to our human beings. So government's preserving the wilderness areas plays an affirmative role for our descendents' prosperity.
On the other hand, as there are many other aspects that deserve the government's attention, the government should allocate the limited amount of money appropriately. As mentioned above, there are many issues that need to be addressed in our society, such as famine problems in some countries, the epidemic diseases all over the world, the international terrorists and the confliction between the development and the environment protection. Governments all over the world should allocate their money and attention appropriately in order to ensure the harmony between the nature and human society.
To sum up, it is the governments' responsibility to preserve publicly owned wilderness areas in their natural state for environmental issue and economic issues. Nevertheless, the government should also pay attention to solve the emergent social issues in the society. |
