145 A new study collected data that shows that people who snore are more likely to gain weight than are people who do not snore. It is well known that many people who snore also stop breathing frequently during the night for a few seconds, a condition called sleep apnea. The interruption of breathing wakes the person—often so briefly that the waking goes unnoticed—and can leave the person too tired during the day to exercise. Anyone who snores, therefore, should try to eat less than the average person and to exercise more.
In this argument, the arguer concludes that people who snore should try to eat less than the average person and to exercise more. To support the conclusion, the arguer points out that a study shows that people who snore are more likely to gain weight than are people who do not snore . In addition,he indicates that sleep apnea can leave the person too tired during the day to exercise. However, this alone neither constitutes a logical argument in favor of the conclusion nor provides compelling support making the argument sound. The arguer ignores certain important concerns, which must be addressed to prove. In my point of view, this arguer suffers from 3 flaws.
First of all, the study cited by the arguer is too vague to be reliable. we are not informed that how many people were surveyed in this study. If, for instance, subjects were no more than 10, the conclusion would be highly suspectable. And the arguer fails to point out that what kinds of people were studied. If few of subjects are snorers and most of subjects did not snore, the conclusion is possible an unconvincing one. Furthermore, the arguer fails to indicate that how the study was conducted. If who conducted the study by themselves or if these questions were leading, people might echo with expected answers, thus the data would be greatly unconvincing.
In addition, alough sleep apnea can wakes the person often, because of it is so briefly that the waking goes unnoticed, whether do the sleep apnea influence the nextday activities? The arguer fails to support enough explanation to illustrate his view. It is well known that there are many snorers around us, in terms of the arguer's explanation that sleep apnea can leave the person too tired during the day to exercise, do these people not work or study normally? In fact,we donot find out these examples. So this brief interruption of breathing has few effection on people's lives.
Finally, do snorers lose weight only by exercise? In modern society, there are many methods to help people losing weight, such as take medicine, inject hormone, bant and so on. Exercise is only one of them and these methods also are useful for losing weight. So people who snore have not to lose weight and prevent sleep apnea only through exercise.
To sum up, though the argument seems to be plausible, in fact, it is neither sound nor persuasive. Not only does it leave out such key issues, but also cites in the analysis the evidence, which doesnot lend strong support to what arguer claims. To make the argument more convincing, the arguer would have to take the following conditions into consideration: making the study more persuative and showing more proofs to attest his or her views. If the argument includes the given factors discussed above, it would have been more thorough and adequate. |
